Fixed-broadband access technology is evolving from exclusively copper-based solutions to hybrid fiber-copper architectures. This article presents the expected next step in evolution of broadband systems, which we call fourth-generation concept. It identifies a technical, infrastructural, and economical niche describes how fiber-access network extended forked feed last ultimate generation DSL shown have gigabit potential. The underlying infrastructural concept presented, economic aspects are...
G.fast is a new standard from the International Telecommunication Union, which targets 1 Gb/s over short copper loops using frequencies up to 212 MHz. This technology requires accurate parametric cable models for simulation, design, and performance evaluation tests. Some existing were designed very high speed digital subscriber line spectra, i.e., 30 MHz, adopt assumptions that are violated when frequency range extended frequencies. paper introduces simple causal model able accurately...
Several new architectures are under investigation for cloud radio access networks, assuming distinct splits of functionality among the network elements. Consequently, research on data compression fronthaul is based assumptions that correspond to a wide variety tradeoffs rate, signal distortion, latency, and computational cost. This letter describes method LTE downlink point-to-point linear prediction Huffman coding, which suitable low cost encoding decoding units with stringent restrictions...
This letter presents a fronthaul signal compression scheme based on linear prediction coding adapted to the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals. The proposed method is capable of providing fine tuning factor, which an alternative legacy methods that tune factor by changing discrete number bits quantizer, and consequently, are only able do so with coarse resolution.
The use of a hybrid copper and fiber architecture is attractive in both fixed access mobile backhauling scenarios. This trend led the industry academia to start developing fourth generation broadband system, which aims at achieving bit-rates 1 Gb/s over short loops. In this context, accurate models twisted-pair cables operating relatively high frequencies are key elements. work describes new parametric cable that incorporate four important characteristics: support up 200 MHz, few parameters,...
This work explores clock synchronization algorithms used to process timestamps from the IEEE 1588 precision time protocol (PTP). It focuses on PTP-unaware network scenario, where nodes do not actively contribute PTP's operation. scenario typically imposes a harsh environment for accurate distribution, primarily due packet delay variation experienced by PTP packets. In this context, it is essential noisy measurements using and strategies that consider underlying models. surveys some...
Put together, the edge and fog form a large diverse pool of computing networking resources from different owners that can be leveraged towards low latency applications as well for alleviating high traffic volume in future networks including 5G beyond. This paper sets out framework integration leveraging on ongoing specifications by ETSI MEC ISG OpenFog Consortium. It also presents technological gaps need to addressed before such an integrated solution developed. These noticeably include...
This paper presents initial findings on how ambient networks technology will enable new ways to establish and manage access service provisioning from a business perspective. The concepts of network composition multi-radio multi-operator wireless provide the framework for advertising discovery, which are essential first steps allowing "any" user be able connect network. Technology support different options described followed by discussion related aspects including: i) payment schemes, ii)...
The evolution towards centralized radio access network (C-RAN) for 5G is driven by the need improved performance and reduced total-cost-of-ownership (TCO). In C-RAN, physically separated remote units (RRUs) baseband (BBUs) are connected via fronthaul (FH) links, which capacity constrained. When base-station antennas upgraded to support massive MIMO techniques, an intra PHY split between RRU BBU becomes favorable avoid dramatic rate growth on FH links. this paper, we present a new uplink...
Third generation mobile communication systems will allow many different services with varying demands on data rate and delay. For those systems, the fixed radio resource management (RRM) techniques used in today's low not be appropriate to ensure efficient utilization of spectrum. Dynamic RRM is necessary order cope large variations rate. We study bunch concept which a hybrid between random dynamic RRM. Within small synchronized cluster (bunch) we use allocation combined SIR-based power...
Hybrid cloud radio access network (CRAN) architecture supports the realization of splitting/virtualization baseband processing unit (BBU) functions between central cloud, office that has large capacity and efficiency, edge an aggregation node which is closer to user, but usually less efficiency. In our previous work, we studied impact different split points (which decide amount communication at center clouds) on system's energy midhaul link bandwidth consumptions. Midhaul defined as part...
Base stations with adaptive antennas is a technology offering the opportunity to increase capacity of cellular mobile network by reducing transmitted interference. This paper presents system description first GSM prototype base station antenna and results commercial field trials for using adaptation in uplink downlink. The performance tests were conducted city center Giessen, north Frankfurt. connected infrastructure Mannesmann Mobilfunk's D2 network. All measurement are very positive show...
In centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architecture, the baseband unit (BBU) is connected to remote (RRU) via a fronthaul (FH) interface. For massive MIMO systems in 5G era, traditional FH interface (e.g. CPRI) becomes bottleneck since required capacity increases proportional number of antennas. New functional split between RRU and BBU thereby considered where carries out more processing than RF-related operation make traffic only scale based on layers. This paper provides one...
Provisioning of cost-effective Ethernet-based fronthaul by reusing the LAN infrastructure available in most commercial buildings is challenging predominantly terms required bandwidth and synchronization. In contrast to a synchronous fronthaul, PTP-based Ethernet network must cope with estimation noise introduced packet delay variation (PDV) for synchronization recovery. The SYNC used PTP on such networks expected suffer from significant PDV due traffic other background traffic. Further...
For many future mobile communication scenarios, the traditional operators are believed to be unable or unwilling support some services, mainly for cost reasons. Thus, there always gaps in coverage and capacity of these systems. This paper describes a non-conventional low-cost concept wireless access using privately operated local points (LAPs) contributing public access, thus adding in, example, homes, offices hotspots. The work has been performed EU-funded ambient networks (AN) project. A...
Integration of heterogeneous access technologies to provide multi-radio allows for dynamic selection. The "always best connected" paradigm can increase system capacity and end user throughput, as well as, reduce the network deployment costs wireless networks. In this paper we present functional entities generic link layer resource management, describe their interactions A focus is show - with an example given 3G WLAN how existing networks be migrated functionality. An important question for future wireless networks is whether the prioritization between different accesses should be controlled by or terminals. Herein we evaluate performance of distributed access-selection algorithms where terminals are responsible both AP selection and necessary measurements. In particular, focus on determining selfish can perform as well centralized ones (for comparison include max-sum, max-min, proportional fair minimum delay allocations). The study conducted...
