Abstract Motivated by recent event studies and modeling efforts on pulsating aurora, which conclude that the precipitation energy during these events is high enough to cause significant chemical changes in mesosphere, this study looks for bulk behavior of auroral pulsations. Based about 400 aurora events, we outline typical duration, geomagnetic conditions, change peak emission height events. We show both green blue decreases 8 km at start interval. This brings hardest 10% electrons down 90...
The non-negative Polar Cap PCC index built from PCN (North) and PCS (South) indices correlates better with the solar wind merging electric field is more representative for total energy input to magnetosphere development of geomagnetic disturbances represented by Kp ring current than either hemispheric indices. present work shows that index, Dst, a high degree accuracy can be derived source function integration PCC-based throughout interval 1992 2018 without attachment real Dst based on low...
The Polar Cap (PC) indices, PCN (North) and PCS (South) are based on polar geomagnetic observations from Qaanaaq (Thule) Vostok, respectively, processed to measure the transpolar plasma convection that may seriously affect space weather conditions. To establish reliable forecasts PC also ensure credibility of their use for scientific analyses solar wind-magnetosphere interactions, additional sources data indices investigated. In search alternative index sources, objective quality criteria...
Abstract The Polar Cap (PC) indices are derived from the magnetic variations generated by transpolar convection of magnetospheric plasma and embedded fields driven interaction with solar wind. PC potentially very useful for space weather monitoring forecasts related research. However, this study suggests that index series in near‐real‐time final versions endorsed International Association Geomagnetism Aeronomy (IAGA) invalid unreliable. Both include wind sector (SWS) effects calculation...
Abstract Polar Cap (PC) indices, PCN North based on magnetic observations from Qaanaaq (THL) in Greenland and PCS South data Vostok Antarctica, are very useful indices for studies of solar wind‐magnetosphere interactions space weather monitoring forecasts. issued the Danish Space Research Institute (DTU Space) while Arctic Antarctic (AARI) St Petersburg. Abstract. The description presented in the paper of relations solar wind sector structure to derivation quiet daily variation (QDC) polar magnetic recordings used for calculation cap (PC) indices is found be unclear and not properly justified. example on inclusion a term an actual QDC series questionable even authors' premises.
Abstract. The Polar Cap (PC) indices were approved by the International Association for Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) in 2013 made available at web portal http://pcindex.org holding prompt (real-time) as well archival index values. present note provides first reported examination of validity IAGA-endorsed method to generate real-time PC It is demonstrated that features derivation procedure defined Janzhura Troshichev (2011) may cause considerable excursions values compared final In...
The Polar Cap (PC) indices were approved by the International Association for Geomagnetism and Aeromony (IAGA) Resolution No. 3 (2013) noting that “ IAGA … recommends use of PC index international scientific community in its near-real time definitive forms” . made available 2014 at web portal http://pcindex.org holding as well final values. values are not permanently available. However, analyses on basis occasional downloads have detected differences between up to 3.65 mV/m (Stauning, 2018b,...

Abstract The present study confirms the validity of previously derived relations between polar cap (PC) indices and ASY‐H Dst SYM‐H ring current when used in real‐time applications. PC are here simulated (SRT) versions by using past data only from −40 days up to time construction quiet reference levels (QDCs) for magnetic data. From analyses spanning a decade (2009–2018), equivalent index values were linear relation with SRT PCN (North) PCS (South) combined form non‐negative PCC indices. For...
The aim of the present contribution is to investigate timing relations between enhancements in Polar Cap (PC) indices and power grid disturbances related geomagnetically induced currents (GIC). polar cap indices, PCN (North) PCS (South), are based on measurements geomagnetic variations central caps. These strongly transpolar convection plasma magnetic fields driven by solar wind. During cases enhanced merging processes at front magnetosphere subsequent tailward embedded fields,...
