ABSTRACT We applied transmission electron microscopy and densitometric image analysis to measure the cell volume ( V ) dry weight (DW) of single bacterial cells. The system was DW Escherichia coli DSM 613 at different growth phases natural assemblages two lakes, Piburger See Gossenköllesee. found a functional allometric relationship between (in femtograms) cubic micrometers) bacteria (DW = 435 · 0.86 ); i.e., smaller had higher ratio than larger measured E. cells ranged from 83 1,172 fg,...

Abstract Cryoconite holes, which can cover 0.1–10% of the surface area glaciers, are small, water‐filled depressions (typically <1 m in diameter and usually <0.5 deep) that form on glaciers when solar‐heated inorganic organic debris melts into ice. Recent studies show cryoconites colonized by a diverse range microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria algae. Whether microbial communities actively influencing biogeochemical cycles or just present dormant state has been matter debate for...

It is well known that the atmosphere a conveyor of microorganisms, and bacteria can act as ice or cloud condensation nuclei, but clouds have not been considered site where organisms live reproduce. Here we show in droplets collected at high altitudes are actively growing reproducing temperatures below 0°C. Since ∼60% earth surface covered by clouds, water should be microbial habitat.

ABSTRACT The seasonal variations in community structure and cell morphology of pelagic procaryotes from a high mountain lake (Gossenköllesee, Austria) were studied by situ hybridization with rRNA-targeted fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probes (FISH) image-analyzed microscopy. High‐altitude lakes are exposed to high fluence rates of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR; 29–400 nm) and contain low concentrations dissolved organic carbon (DOC). While in most lowland lakes, DOC can be used predict UV transparency with sufficient accuracy, current models fail estimate UVR clear alpine lakes. In these phytoplankton may contribute significantly the attenuation either as particles or a source chromophoric matter (CDOM) distinctive properties. We investigated series 26 Alps...

The study of fish concentrations and sediment inventories in 19 European high mountain lakes (40−67°N) shows that a fraction organochlorine compounds (OCs), the less volatile (LVC; subcooled liquid vapor pressure ≤ 10-2.5 Pa), are trapped higher locations. This general trend is not significantly influenced by possible local sources. Compound distribution related to average air temperatures. phase-change pseudoenthalpies calculated from closely match summed theoretical volatilization...
