The term Anthropocene, proposed and increasingly employed to denote the current interval of anthropogenic global environmental change, may be discussed on stratigraphic grounds.A case can made for its consideration as a formal epoch in that, since start Industrial Revolution, Earth has endured changes sufficient leave signature distinct from that Holocene or previous Pleistocene interglacial phases, encompassing novel biotic, sedimentary, geochemical change. These changes, although likely...
A direct approach to the analysis of systems with single, or commensurate delays is presented, and compared other recently proposed methods. The finite polynomials arising in this method are shown have useful sensitivity properties. Remarks given concerning stable independent delay.

Here we present combined radioisotopic dating (U-Pb zircon) and cyclostratigraphic analysis of the carbon isotope excursion at Paleocene-Eocene (P-E) boundary in Spitsbergen to determine numerical age boundary. Incorporating total uncertainty from both data sets gives an ranging 55.728 55.964 Ma, within error a recently proposed astronomical ∼55.93 Ma. Combined with assumption that Paleocene Epoch spans twenty-five 405 kyr cycles, our new for suggests ∼66 Ma Cretaceous-Paleogene Furthermore,...
The Middle to early Late Devonian transition from diminutive plants the first forests is a key episode in terrestrialization. two major plant groups currently recognized such "transitional forests" are pseudosporochnaleans (small medium trees showing some morphological similarity living tree ferns and palms) archaeopteridaleans (trees with woody trunks leafy branches probably related conifers). Here we report new type of "transitional" in-situ forest based on lycopsid fossils Plantekløfta...
There is an unexplained terrestrial mass extinction at the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary (359 million years ago). The discovery in east Greenland of malformed land plant spores demonstrates that was coincident with elevated UV-B radiation demonstrating ozone layer reduction. Mercury data through level prove that, unlike other extinctions, there were no planetary scale volcanic eruptions. Importantly, a major climatic warming ended intense final glacial cycle latest Devonian ice age. A...
A mechanical velocity selector for the study of monochromatic neutrons in range energies below 0.3 ev is described. The instrument has been applied to measurement cross section boron, which found be 703\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}24}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ 2200 meters per second velocity.
Land plants can adjust the concentration of protective ultraviolet B (UV-B)–absorbing compounds (UACs) in outer wall their reproductive propagules response to ambient UV-B flux. To infer changes radiation flux at Earth’s surface during end-Permian mass extinction, we analyze UAC abundances ca. 800 pollen grains from an independently dated Permian-Triassic boundary section Tibet. Our data reveal excursion UACs that coincide with a spike mercury and negative carbon-isotope latest Permian...
Stratigraphic and sedimentological fieldwork on the Falkland Islands confirms that they were originally part of South Africa. East West have contrasting geological deformation histories are separated by Sound fault, which marks a significant edge to Cape Fold Belt. The degree structural metamorphism in is substantially less than Falkland, adjustments differential shortening between two islands being reflected structures developed along fault. Prior fragmentation Gondwana, Platform Maurice...
For the purposes of a high-resolution multi-disciplinary study Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay Formation, two boreholes were drilled at Swanworth Quarry and one Metherhills, south Dorset, UK. Together, cores represent first complete section through entire formation close to type section. We present graphic logs that record stratigraphy cores, outline complementary geophysical analytical data sets (gamma ray, magnetic susceptibility, total organic carbon, carbonate, δ 13 C org ). Of particular...
Compact toroids have been generated in a cylindrical resistive flux conserver. They are observed to rotate so that their major axis is perpendicular the of Subsequently they remain stationary and magnetic fields decay with time constant about 100 \ensuremath{\mu}s. This first observation predicted tipping mode its saturation when no external present. The compact contain toroidal initially prolate shape.
Devonian tetrapods (limbed vertebrates), known from an increasingly large number of localities, have been shown to be mainly aquatic with many primitive features. In contrast, the post-Devonian record is marked by Early Mississippian temporal gap ranging earliest Carboniferous (Tournaisian and early Viséan) mid-Viséan. By mid-Viséan, had become effectively terrestrial as attested presence stem amniotes, developed essentially modern aspect, given rise crown group. Up now, only two localities...
Abstract We present the rationale for a cross‐disciplinary investigation addressing ‘ D evonian plant hypothesis’ which proposes that evolutionary appearance of trees with deep, complex rooting systems represents one major biotic feedbacks on geochemical carbon cycling during P hanerozoic. According to this hypothesis, have dramatically enhanced mineral weathering driving an increased flux Ca 2+ oceans and, ultimately, 90% decline in atmospheric CO 2 levels through alaeozoic. Furthermore,...
The development of a coaxial plasma discharge in an initially uniform gas filling has been studied experimentally and theoretically. In the experiment, usual outer electrode was replaced by current return at rear system, permitting unobstructed access to for diagnostics. These diagnostics were image converter photography, magnetic probes, holographic interferometry. theory consists two parts: two-dimensional (axisymmetric) time-dependent fluid computations supplementary analytic model, both...
