Abstract Inorganic metal–oxygen cluster anions form a class of compounds that is unique in its topological and electronic versatility important several disciplines. Names such as Berzelius , Werner Pauling appear the early literature field. These clusters (so‐called isopoly‐ heteropolyanions) contain highly symmetrical core assemblies MO x units (M = V, Mo, W) often adopt quasi‐spherical structures based on Archimedean Platonic solids considerable interest. Abstract In their highest oxidation states the early transition metals V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, and Re form tetrahedral, strongly colored thioanions endowed with some remarkable properties. Thiometalates can be formed by solid‐state reactions or in solution from oxometalates. Poly‐thiometalates mixed valences produced new types of intramolecular condensation‐redox thioanions. The metal‐sulfur bonds react either nucleophilically electrophilically, case Mo–S this is biochemical interest. It important...

Abstract A key reaction in the biological and material world is controlled linking of simple (molecular) building blocks, a with which one can create mesoscopic structures, which, for example, contain cavities display specifically desired properties, but also compounds that exhibit typical solid‐state structures. The best example this context chemistry host–guest interactions, spans entire range from three‐ two‐dimensional to one‐ “zero‐dimensional”, discrete host Members class...

Molybdenum monsters: A huge molybdenum cluster, comprising large areas with different local symmetry (in the picture colors represent (smaller) Mo fragments) is prepared and characterized. Molybdate fragments, which can tolerate a change of electron density at various positions, be linked in tremendous variety ways according to split-and-link process. Small changes boundary conditions, especially redox control growth, as well H+ ion concentration, have deciding influence on

Pythagorean harmony can be found in the spherical polyoxometalate clusters described here (see illustration for an example of a structure), since there are interesting relationships between so-called magic numbers (12, 32, 42, 72, 132) relevant viruses and number building blocks cluster. The size these Keplerate tailored by varying type connections pentagons means different spacers.

The earlier tremendous interest in molybdenum blue solutions-an enigma for generations of chemists-became even more pronounced when it turned out that the basic building units correspond to giant wheel-shaped clusters with nanostructured cavities, displaying exceptional aesthetic beauty. This discovery will stimulate new ideas supramolecular chemistry, colloid and materials science. wheels represent nanosensors nanoreactors, enabling initiation chemical processes at different positions, like...
