Significance We investigate the origin of static friction, threshold force at which a frictional interface starts to slide. For rough contacts involving rubber or human skin, we show that real contact area, friction is proportional, significantly decreases under increasing shear, well before onset sliding. those soft materials, our results will impact how use and interpret current mechanics models.

With the ever growing interest in wavelength division multiplexing transmission systems, need for an optical amplifier with a large bandwidth is more and necessary. Unlike standard erbium-doped silica fiber amplifiers, fluoride-based amplifiers display uniform gain spectra. The benefit expected from fluoride multiwavelength signals has been experimentally assessed through comparisons single- cascaded-amplifiers configurations. Four db flatness was achieved four wavelength-multiplexed...

Six-axes force/torque sensors are increasingly needed in mechanical engineering. Here, we introduce a flexure-based design for such sensors, which solves some of the drawbacks existing designs. In particular, it is backlash-free, can be wirelessly monitored, exactly enforces 90 degrees angles between axes, and enables visual inspection monitored system thanks to its hollow structure. We first describe generic design, implementation calibration procedure. then demonstrate capabilities through...

A 30 dB optical net gain and 12 dBm maximum output power for −1 signal input have been measured at a wavelength of 1.54 μm with an erbium doped ZBLAN fibre pumped 1.47–1.48 μm. The results confirm the great potential fibres hosting rare earth ions to generate amplification. discussion points out parameters be studied improve amplifier performance.

A new type of optical fibre amplifier, a 'hybrid amplifier', especially developed for multiwavelength long distance transmission systems in the 1.55 µm window is presented. 38 dB small signal gain, an +18 dBm saturation output power, very flat gain spectrum and high signal-to-noise-ratio are obtained.

An optical gain of 35 dB at 2.716 μm signal wavelength has been measured in an erbium doped ZBLAN fibre. A pump-wavelength scanning determined the pump for maximum gain. This was found to be 0.642 μm. The absorption this Er3+ fibre is 0.649 It deduced that excited state process improves performance such fibres considered.

Interest behavior of the flattened dynamic gain an erbium-doped fluorozirconate fiber amplifier is demonstrated in a lightwave CATV system including 50-channel subcarrier multiplexer. Using two analog distributed-feedback (DFB) laser diodes, one with relatively high chirp and other very low chirp, comparison between amplifiers made silica fluoride demonstrates significant influence FM response when spectral not constant.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"...

Gain spectrum and signal/noise ratio excursion assessment for a new type of fibre amplifier called ‘hybrid amplifier’ has been performed through circulating loop experiment. A wide four-wavelength multiplex transmitted up to 10 amplifiers with little degradation in the channel power difference ratio. This allows transmission at several gigabits per second be performed.
