The early evolution of SW Europe Variscides started by opening the Rheic ocean at ∼500 Ma, splitting Avalonia from Armorica/Iberia. Subduction on SE side generated Paleotethys back‐arc basin (430–390 Armorica Iberia), with development Porto‐Tomar‐Ferreira do Alentejo (PTFA) dextral transform defining boundary between continental and Finisterra microplate to W. Obduction was followed Armorica/Iberia collision emplacement NW Iberian Allochthonous Units 390–370 whereas toward west PTFA, there...
Abstract An ML 4.9 earthquake occurred in Arraiolos, central Alentejo, on the 15 January 2018. As mainshock was recorded as highest magnitude region, a thorough investigation of cause this seismicity carried out. In study, local seismic tomography conducted for first time to demonstrate importance uniform spatial distribution earthquakes obtaining accurate crustal images via inversion. Two different inversions were performed using tomographic software. The main difference between both is...
The Variscan ophiolites in southern Iberia occur both as a thin belt along the boundary between Ossa-Morena (OMZ) and South Portuguese Zones (SPZ) (Beja-Acebuches ophiolite) dismembered, scattered allochthonous klippen on top of lower Palaeozoic sequences within internal areas OMZ. Beja-Acebuches ophiolite corresponds to amphibolite-serpentinite displaying lithological organisation including, from bottom top: metaperidotites (harzburgitic/dunitic) cumulate pyroxenites, flaser gabbros with...
Abstract The structure of the southernmost domain Ossa Morena Zone in Portugal (south sector Iberian Autochthonous Terrane) is strongly controlled by earlier deformation events. first two events correspond to tangential strain regimes, marked subhorizontal milonitic foliations. These seem be directly related with obduction/subduction process during Variscan ocean closure and emplacement Beja-Acebuches Oceanic Terrane. In this (Évora-Beja Domain), upper tectono-stratigraphic unit (Moura...
Abstract. In this paper, we report the observation of a significant decrease vertical component atmospheric electrical field in Évora region (Portugal) during M = 4.1 Sousel earthquake 27 March 2010. The epicentre was 52 km from site, which falls within theoretical preparation radius. A simple interpretation based on hypothetical radon emissions is presented, and future experiments required to elucidate these observations are outlined. To our knowledge, first reported preceding an earthquake.
The Early Paleozoic geodynamic evolution in SW Iberia is believed to have been dominated by the opening of Rheic Ocean. Ocean generally accepted resulted from drift peri-Gondwanan terranes such as Avalonia northern margin Gondwana during Late CambrianEarly Ordovician times. closure was final result a continent-continent collision between and Laurussia that produced Variscan orogen. Ossa-Morena Zone peri-Gondwana terrane, which preserves spread fragments ophiolites - Internal Zones Ophiolite...
This article describes the screening, ranking and characterization of ultramafic mafic rocks in southern Portugal for mineral carbonation as an alternative to conventional CO2 storage sedimentary rocks. A set criteria including mineralogy, structure, surface area, distance sources, expected volume, socioeconomic conditions was applied screen rock massifs Alentejo region, Portugal. Ranking indicated that plutonic Sines Torrão‒Odivelas were most promising. made massif, a subvolcanic massif...
The potential for mineral carbonation of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a plutonic mafic rock is addressed this work through set laboratory experiments on gabbro-anorthosite sample from the Torrão - Odivelas Massif (Portugal). experiment was conducted two stages under pressure (8 MPa) and temperature (313.15 K) conditions similar to those expected around CO2 injection well. Stage-I simulated dissolution conditions, with crushed (1–3 mm) exposed 30 days supersaturated seawater (0.576 M). Stage-II...
The Terena Formation is located in the central part of Ossa-Morena Zone (OMZ) and outcrops core a latter (D3) first order syncline. This Lower Devonian flysch shows an unusual “Z” shape, with sector trending nearly N-S, tips NW-SE. crossed by cleavage (NW-SE) showing apparent dextral (clockwise) transection pattern, anomalous opposite to regional widespread sinistral (anti-clockwise) transpression. same cartographic transection, at outcrop scale, mesoscopic folds transection. During N-S...
Abstract A high concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) can affect ecosystem health in many ways. It is therefore essential that spatial trends pollutants are assessed and monitored. Two questions must be addressed when quantifying pollution: how to define a non-polluted sample reduce the problem’s dimensionality. geochemical dataset composition variables (chemical elements), where components represent relative importance each part whole. Therefore, comply with compositional...
This work addresses the contamination of sediments an alluvial plain and riverbed a tributary San Francisco River, in Brazilian state Minas Gerais, by potentially toxic elements from industrial unit metallic alloys production. area was subdivided into four areas (A1, A2, A3, A0 (background area)) where sediment samples have been collected followed geochemical characterization spatial distribution contaminants. based on (1) analysis dissolved interstitial waters, (2) identification...
] The interpretation reported by Ribeiro et al. [2007]favors the presence of a Cadomian basement within SWEurope Variscides, eventually including older relics, considering as well role this in theevolution Variscan cycle; particular issue wasdeveloped subsequent paper [Ribeiro al., 2009]. Thepossibility Grenville inliers is not definitely ruled out bythe arguments Pereira [2009]. Indeed, few (nearlyconcordant) U/Pb zircon ages 0.94 to 1.2 Ga are reportedby Linnemann [2008]; several other...
