Abstract Breeding high‐yielding rice cultivars through increasing biomass is a key strategy to meet rising global food demands. Yet, growth can stimulate methane ( CH 4 ) emissions, exacerbating climate change, as cultivation major source of this powerful greenhouse gas. Here, we show in series experiments that actually reduce emissions from typical paddy soils. Averaged across 33 cultivars, increase 10% resulted 10.3% decrease soil with high carbon (C) content. Compared low‐yielding...

Simulation models are extensively used to predict agricultural productivity and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the uncertainties of (reduced) model ensemble simulations have not been assessed systematically for variables affecting food security climate change mitigation, within multi-species contexts. We report an international comparison benchmarking exercise, showing potential multi-model ensembles nitrous oxide (N2 O) emissions wheat, maize, rice temperate grasslands. Using a...
Summary The N orth W yke F arm P latform was established as a U nited K ingdom national capability for collaborative research, training and knowledge exchange in agro‐environmental sciences. Its remit is to research agricultural productivity ecosystem responses different management practices beef sheep production lowland grasslands. A system based on permanent pasture implemented three 21‐ha farmlets obtain baseline data hydrology, nutrient cycling 2 years. Since then two have been modified...
Excess nitrate (NO3–) loading in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems can result critical environmental health issues. NO3–-rich groundwater has been recorded the Guanzhong Plain Yellow River Basin of China for over 1000 years. To assess sources fate NO3– vadose zone groundwater, numerous samples were collected via borehole drilling field surveys, followed by analysis stable isotope quantification. The results demonstrated that concentration 38% exceeded limit set World Health Organization....
Owing to the unique advantages of ionic liquids, preparation and industrial application liquids have attracted considerable interest. Herein, we report that a series simple ammonium has been synthesized characterised. These are air water stable, easy prepare from amine acid, relatively cheap. They used as catalysts environmentally benign solvents for cracking reactions dialkoxypropanes, eliminating need volatile organic additional catalysts. The results clearly demonstrate these can be...
Apple production systems are an important component in the Chinese agricultural sector with 1.99 million ha plantation. The orchards China could play role carbon (C) cycle of terrestrial ecosystems and contribute to C sequestration. sequestration capability apple was analyzed through identifying a set potential assessment factors their weighting determined by field model study literature. dynamics net sink estimated based on orchard inventory data from 1990s analysis. showed that trees...
Abstract Application of manure has been recommended as an effective strategy to mitigate climate change. However, the magnitude greenhouse gases emission derived by application agricultural soils across environmental conditions still remains unclear. Here, we synthesized data from 379 observations in China and quantified responses soil nitrous oxide (N 2 O), carbon dioxide (CO ) methane (CH 4 emissions (Org-M) comparison chemical fertilizers (Min-F) or non-fertilizers (Non-F). The results...
Crop growth simulation models can differ greatly in their treatment of key processes and hence response to environmental conditions. Here, we used an ensemble 26 process-based wheat applied at sites across a European transect compare sensitivity changes temperature (−2 +9°C) precipitation (−50 +50%). Model results were analysed by plotting them as impact surfaces (IRSs), classifying the IRS patterns individual model simulations, describing these classes analysing factors that may explain...
