Policymakers are increasingly using norm-based messages to influence individual decision-making.We partner with a metropolitan water utility implement natural field experiment examining the effect of such on residential demand. The data, drawn from more than 100,000 households, indicate that social comparison had greater behavior simple pro-social or technical information alone. Moreover, our data suggest most effective among households identified as least price sensitive: high-users.Yet...

Policymakers increasingly use norm-based messages to promote conservation efforts. Despite the apparent success of such strategies, empirical analyses have thus far focused exclusively on short-run effects. From a policy perspective, however, whether and how strategies influence behavior in long-run is equal interest. We partner with metropolitan water utility implement natural field experiment examining effect longer-run patterns use. Empirical results are striking. While appeals pro-social...
This study examines why people initially give to charities, they remain committed the cause, and what factors attenuate these influences. Using an experimental design that links donations across distinct treatments separated in time, we present several results. For example, previous donors are more likely give, contribute more, than other donor types. Yet, how were acquired is critical: agents attracted by economic mechanism continue giving a nonmechanism factor. From methodological...
This study considers the response of household electricity consumption to social nudges during peak load events. Our investigation two nudges. The first targets conservation events, while second promotes aggregate conservation. Using data from a natural field experiment with 42,100 households, we find that both reduce by 2 4% when implemented in isolation and nearly 7% combination. These findings suggest an important role for regulation markets limited crowd out effects.
This study explores the economics of charitable fund‐raising. We begin by developing theory that examines optimal lottery design while explicitly relaxing both risk‐neutrality and preference homogeneity assumptions. test our using a battery experimental treatments find theoretical predictions are largely confirmed. Specifically, we single‐ multiple‐prize lotteries dominate voluntary contribution mechanism in total dollars raised number contributors attracted. Moreover, fund‐raising depends...
Field experiments provide a useful way to address number of important issues in environmental and resource economics. This article provides review studies that have used field inform (1) benefit–cost analysis (2) efforts promote conservation. In these areas, scholars test existing theories, the development new guide policymakers. After summarizing contributions, we discuss directions for use
Abstract This paper investigates whether and why laws requiring chain restaurants to post calories on menus menu boards work. We develop a model of consumed that highlights multiple potential channels through which these influence choice outlines an empirical strategy disentangle alternatives. test the predictions our using data from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System body mass index (BMI) consumer well-being, as well own surveys how law influences where people eat randomized...
One fact that has emerged in modern societies is people help others. Whether it donating a few dollars to feed the poor or volunteering time rebuild someone's life after natural disaster, around globe commonly lend hand. This study provides an overview of support, summarizing gifts both and money globe. We also highlight research indicates useful ways which we can enhance charitable pie. Our discussion revolves individual giving corporate philanthropy, but focus on empirical insights from...
This article provides an overview of the use field experiments in energy and resource economics. I concentrate on two areas study; that (i) speak to dynamic pricing plans manage electricity water (ii) explore adoption saving technologies. Viewed its totality, this work suggests both neo-classical factors, such as prices or search costs, behavioural constructs, salience social norms, influence water. For academics, studies reviewed provide a deeper understanding individual behaviour factors...
