Acceptance of marine protected areas (MPAs) as fishery and conservation tools has been hampered by lack direct evidence that MPAs successfully seed unprotected with larvae targeted species. For the first time, we present large-scale population connectivity within an existing effective network MPAs. A new parentage analysis identified four parent-offspring pairs from a large, exploited coral-reef fish Zebrasoma flavescens in Hawai'i, revealing larval dispersal distances ranging 15 to 184 km....
Anthropogenic impacts are increasingly affecting the world's oceans. Networks of marine protected areas (MPAs) provide an option for increasing ecological and economic benefits often provided by single MPAs. It is vital to empirically assess effects MPA networks prioritize monitoring data necessary explain those effects. We summarize types based on their intended management outcomes illustrate a framework evaluating whether connectivity network providing outcome greater than sum individual...
The Coral Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (CRAMP) of Hawai'i was established in 1998 to monitor long-term changes coral reef benthic communities around the state. Development methodology involved analysis results from previous monitoring programs determine precision statistical power various methods detect change. Additional field trials were conducted examine factors such as repeatability, appropriate transect length, number transects, samples per transect, cover estimation...
Abstract: No previous studies have conclusively documented the magnitude of effect aquarium collecting on natural populations. In Hawaii concern over effects reef fish populations for trade began in early 1970s, primarily response to multiple‐use conflicts between aquarium‐fish collectors and recreational dive‐tour operators. 1997–1998 we used a paired control‐impact design estimate collectors. We compared differences abundance along visual belt transects collection sites, where was known...

The Hawaiian Islands comprise a large and isolated archipelago that includes the largest reef area in United States. Managing nearshore fisheries this is major challenge compounded by difficulty of coordinating multiple agencies to provide governance across broad series islands with substantial social political differences. There has been interest in, progress toward, key elements ecosystem-based management (EBM) Hawaii, including network MPAs community-based co-management. However, slow...
This overview compares and synthesizes the articles of this theme issue. It highlights that progress has been made toward goals marine ecosystem-based management (EBM) in tropical regions. Four key findings are presented: (1) Tailoring EBM to specific contexts ultimately determines success. (2) Employment a wide variety tools is necessary complementary spatial through protected areas (MPAs). (3) Although approaches may be usefully defined using oceanographic ecological principles, design...
A network of nine Fish Replenishment Areas (FRAs) was established in West Hawai'i 2000 response to declines reef fishes taken by aquarium collectors. In 1999, we 23 study sites FRAs, areas open collectors, and reference (existing protected areas) collect data both before after the closure FRA 2000. To date have conducted bimonthly fish surveys as well benthic habitats all sites. Baseline surveys, done closure, document significant effects collector harvesting on selected fishes. On average,...
Abstract Stevenson, T. C., Tissot, B. N., and Dierking, J. 2011. Fisher behaviour influences catch productivity selectivity in West Hawaii's aquarium fishery. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 813–822. In 1999, marine protected areas (MPAs) were implemented along the west coast Big Island Hawaii, closing ∼35% coastline to fishing. Catch per unit effort total most commonly targeted fish, yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens), have increased since implementation MPAs, yet its abundance has...
This article examines a conflict involving the protection of coral reefs from aquarium fish collecting along coast western Hawai'i. The involved parties included collectors, dive tour operators, Hawai'i Division Aquatic Resources, reef advocates, and administrative/legislature state actors. An attempt was made to resolve controversy through combination legislative action environmental dispute resolution. responsible agency approached issue based on implicit assumption that it could be...
The black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii Leach, 1814) is a relatively large prosobranch gastropod mollusc ranging from approximately Point Arena in northern California to Bahia Tortugas and Isla Guadalupe, Mexico. In the United States, populations of on offshore islands, especially those southern California, were particularly prior mid 1980s. Analysis long-term fishery-dependent -independent data revealed that fishing pressure combination with lethal disease, withering syndrome, has resulted...
