The tribological behaviour of cobalt–tungsten alloy coatings electrodeposited under direct or pulse current mode from a cobalt sulphate–sodium tungstate bath was investigated. At low average density 0˙5 A dm–2 the contain amount tungsten that leads to milky appearance coatings. These have high roughness, hardness, and exhibit coefficient friction wear in sliding tests against corundum. In contrast, deposited at higher 1 also but properties comparable ones hard chromium physical vapour TiN.
