The management and treatment of patients with suicidal behavior is one the most challenging tasks for health-care professionals. Patients affective disorders are at high risk behavior, therefore, should be a target prevention. Numerous international studies lithium use have documented anti-suicidal effects since 1970s. Despite unambiguous evidence lithium's recommendations in national guidelines its acute maintenance therapy disorders, still underrepresented. following article provides...

Recent findings have indicated that lithium treatment markedly reduces suicide risk in major affective disorders. To compare the effect of with carbamazepine and amitriptyline, suicidal behavior was analyzed during randomized prospective long-term MAP study (N = 378; duration 2.5 years). Of nine suicides five attempted suicides, none took place treatment. The support view has a specific antisuicidal over above its prophylactic benefit.

In a randomized, prospective, multicenter study with an observation period of 2.5 years, the differential prophylactic efficacy lithium versus carbamazepine was compared in 171 patients fulfilling DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder. Serum drug levels were 0.6 +/- 0.1 mmol/L and 6.1 1.3 [micro sign]g/mL carbamazepine. Patients subdivided into classical subgroup (bipolar I without mood-incongruent delusions comorbidity, N = 67) nonclassical including all other (N 104). Classical had lower...

Objectives The genetically polymorphic enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 contributes to the biotransformation of antipsychotic drug haloperidol. impact polymorphism on haloperidol pharmacokinetics, adverse events, and efficacy was prospectively evaluated under naturalistic conditions in 172 unselected psychiatric inpatients with acute psychotic symptoms. Methods Serum trough levels reduced patients receiving clinically adjusted doses were analyzed days 3, 14, 28 after hospital admission....

Method: Patients with a major depressive episode ( n = 32), or manic 30) (both Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Mental Disorders‐IV, Mini‐International Neuropsychiatric Interview‐confirmed), 31 healthy controls were included. Evidence based on controlled studies is still limited for treatment strategies that prevent recurrence of suicide attempts. Findings from observational as well meta-analytic strongly suggest lithium may have suicide-protective properties.Patients with a recent attempt in the context an affective spectrum disorder (n = 167) were treated either or placebo during 12-month period.Survival analysis showed no significant difference suicidal acts between and placebo-treated individuals (adjusted...

Concerns about potential adverse effects of long-term exposure to lithium as a mood-stabilizing treatment notably include altered renal function. However, the incidence severe dysfunction; rate decline over time; dose, serum concentration, and duration treatment; relative vs. aging; contributions sex other factors all remain unclear.Accordingly, we acquired data from 12 collaborating international sites 312 bipolar disorder patients (6142 person-years, 2669 assays) treated with carbonate for...

Recent investigations have indicated that adequate lithium treatment lowers the suicide mortality associated with affective illness. One important question is whether mechanism by which prophylaxis may be effective in prolonging survival can explained exclusively terms of successful protection against recurrence depressive episodes, or one should consider an independent anti-suicidal factor. We investigated a group high-risk patients recurrent disorders (n = 167) who had committed more...
