Nisin is a lantibiotic widely used for the preservation of food and beverages. Recently, investigators have reported that nisin may clinical applications treating bacterial infections. The aim this study was to investigate effects ultra pure grade ZP (>95% purity) on taxonomically diverse bacteria common human oral cavity saliva derived multi-species biofilms, discern toxicity against cells relevant cavity. The minimum inhibitory concentrations bactericidal distinct were determined using agar...

Epidemiological studies reveal significant associations between periodontitis and oral cancer. However, knowledge about the contribution of periodontal pathogens to cancer potential regulatory mechanisms involved is limited. Previously, we showed that nisin, a bacteriocin commonly used food preservative, reduced tumorigenesis extended life expectancy in tumor-bearing mice. In addition, nisin has antimicrobial effects on key pathogens. Thus, purpose this study was test hypothesis...

Given the potential relationship between head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) microbial dysbiosis, we profiled microbiome within healthy normal tumorous (primary metastatic) human tissues from oral cavity, larynx-pharynx, lymph nodes using 16S rRNA sequencing. Alpha beta diversity analyses revealed that had greatest richness in community diversity, while metastatic populations were most closely related to one another. Compared normal, microbiota associated with tumors supported...

Abstract CD 44, an extracellular matrix ( ECM ) receptor, has been described as a cancer stem cell marker in multiple cancers, including head and neck squamous carcinoma HNSCC ). orasphere formation or stemness was characterized by cleavage of thus we hypothesized that this proteolytic processing may be critical to tumorigenesis. We tested hypothesis examining the mechanisms regulate process vitro vivo, exploring its clinical relevance human specimens. Sphere assays have used evaluate vitro....

Oral pathogens, including Treponema denticola, initiate the dysregulation of tissue homeostasis that characterizes periodontitis. However, progress research on roles T. denticola in microbe-host interactions and signaling, microbial communities, physiology, molecular evolution has been hampered by limitations genetic methodologies. This is typified an extremely low transformation efficiency inability to transform most widely studied strain with shuttle plasmids. Previous studies have...

This paper describes a high-throughput method that relies upon microplate reader to score coaggregation 60 min postmixing, and use of high-speed real-time imaging technology describe the rate over time. The results visual, microplate, FlowCam(™) aggregation scores for oral bacteria Streptococcus gordonii, oralis, Actinomyces oris, whose ability coaggregate are well characterized, compared. Following mixing all possible pairs, top fraction supernatant was added quantify cell-density. Pairs...

Abstract Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease characterized by inflammation and destruction of periodontal tissues including the ligament fibers alveolar bone. Recent epidemiological studies have revealed significant association between periodontitis oral cancer. While precise mechanisms that mediate these associations are not well understood, pathogens, Treponema denticola (T. denticola), which believed to initiate destructive inflammatory responses dysbiosis or dysregulation...
