Abstract Background Worldwide feralization of crop species into agricultural weeds threatens global food security. Weedy rice is a feral form that infests paddies worldwide and aggressively outcompetes cultivated varieties. Despite increasing attention in recent years, comprehensive understanding the origins weedy relatives how universal process acts at genomic molecular level to allow rapid adaptation weediness are still yet be explored. Results We use whole-genome sequencing examine origin...

Germination represents the first major transition in plants, and seed dormancy influences germination timing. However, mechanism by which variations due to genetic variation or maternal environment influence timing has not been studied depth. In this study, effects of temperature during maturation (maternal temperature) on weedy rice seedling emergence a field were evaluated. The experiments repeated for 4 years using seeds collected from groups, represented different degrees dormancy. was...

Abstract Agricultural weeds are the most important biotic constraints to global crop production, and chief among these is weedy rice. Despite increasing yield losses from rice in recent years worldwide, genetic basis of weediness evolution remains unclear. Using whole-genome sequence analyses, we examined origins adaptation Japanese We find evidence for a weed origin tropical japonica ancestry, which has not previously been documented surveys worldwide. further show that occurs largely...

To maximize crop growth, crops need to capture sunlight efficiently. This property is primarily influenced by the shape of such as angle, area, and arrangement leaves. We constructed a rice ( Oryza sativa L.) inbred line that displayed an ideal transition plant shapes in terms receiving efficiency. During vegetative this exhibited tiller spreading with increased number, which formed parabolic antenna-like structure. The architecture probably improved light reception efficiency individuals...

Weedy rice is a conspecific weed of cultivated ( Oryza sativa L.) and primary direct‐seeded production systems worldwide. Japan has increasingly adopted directly seeded even though this practice remains limited. Summary Areas infested with Solanum carolinense , an introduced perennial weed, have increased quickly in Japan. The genetic structure of a S. population along the Takano River Kyoto, Japan was investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis to reveal how introductions and local spread contributed development this population. Along terrace beside river adjacent roadside, we defined cluster above‐ground shoots as subpopulation 60 subpopulations were identified....
