Understanding of the formative conditions fluvial bedforms is significant for both river management and geological studies. Diagrams showing bedform stability have been widely used analyses sedimentary structures. However, use discriminants to determine boundaries different regimes has not yet explored. In this study, we discriminant functions describe a range in 3‐D dimensionless parametric space. We do by means analysis using Mahalanobis distance. analyzed 3,793 available laboratory field...

ABSTRACT Sedimentary bedforms such as ripples and dunes are generated both by river flows sediment‐laden gravity currents. Gravity current deposits usually parameterized using existing bedform phase diagrams which based on data from laboratory experiments field observations of open‐channel flows. Yet, it is not evident that flow applicable to deposits. hydrodynamics dependent vertical density variation, stratification, therefore fundamentally different New produce conducted compared data. We study the behavior of a confined stream made two immiscible fluids when it reaches T junction. Two flow patterns are witnessed: is either directed in only one sidearm, yielding preferential pathway for dispersed phase, or splits between both. show that selection these not triggered by shape junction nor capillary effects, but results from confinement. It can be anticipated terms hydrodynamic properties flow. A simple model universal relevant adimensional parameters problem presented and discussed.

The interaction between turbidity currents and mobile substrates can lead to the development of different types bedforms. Although much research has been conducted on bedform beneath open channel flows, into waning gravity is relatively rare. Analysis density current-related therefore relied upon flow phase diagrams. We report an experimental study designed assess bedforms under steady saline currents. developed stepped profiles in which a higher-density basal zone was separated from ambient...

Abstract Sedimentary structures in ancient deposits are clues to reconstruct past geohazards. While parallel lamination formed by plane beds is one of the most common sedimentary event such as turbidites, formative conditions for remain unclear. In literature, two types (upper and lower beds) exist supposed develop under different shear stresses, particle sizes, flow regimes. Here, we present new phase diagrams based on compilation existing data regarding hydraulic clarify formation...

Abstract. Plane beds develop under flows in fluvial and marine environments; they are recorded as parallel lamination sandstone beds, such those found turbidites. However, whereas turbidites typically exhibit lamination, rarely feature dune-scale cross lamination. Although the reason for scarcity of cross-lamination is still debated, formation dunes may be dampened by suspended load. Here, we perform, first time, linear stability analysis to show that with load facilitate plane beds. For a...
