Graphene Staying Strong Although exfoliated graphene can be extremely strong, it is produced on too small a scale for materials application. more practical by chemical vapor deposition, but the presence of grain boundaries between crystallites apparently weakens material. Lee et al. (p. 1073 ) show that postprocessing steps during removal sheets oxidize and weaken them. If these are avoided, material comparable in strength to graphene.

This research explores the nonlinear elastic properties of two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide. We derive a thermodynamically rigorous constitutive equation and then calculate response MoS${}_{2}$ with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The are used to predict behavior suspended monolayer subjected spherical indenter load at finite strains in multiple-length-scale element analysis model. model is validated experimentally by indenting circular membranes an atomic...

Graphene is an ideal candidate for lightweight, high-strength composite materials given its superior mechanical properties (specific strength of 130 GPa and stiffness 1 TPa). To date, easily scalable graphene-like in a form separated flakes (exfoliated graphene, graphene oxide, reduced oxide) have been investigated as candidates large-scale applications such material reinforcement. These do not fully exhibit all the capabilities materials. In current study, we show that macro (2 inch × 2...

Cells directly probe and respond to the physicomechanical properties of their extracellular environment, a dynamic process which has been shown play key role in regulating both cellular adhesive processes differential function. Recent studies indicate that stem cells show lineage-specific differentiation when cultured on substrates approximating stiffness profiles specific tissues. Although tissues are associated with range Young's modulus values for bulk rigidity, at subcellular level,...

Hemocyanins are multimeric oxygen transport proteins present in the blood of arthropods and molluscs, containing up to 8 oxygen-binding functional units per monomer. In hemocyanins assembled decamer ‘building blocks’ formed 5 dimer ‘plates’, routinely forming didecamer or higher-order assemblies with d5 c5 symmetry. Here we describe cryoEM structures (20-mer) tridecamer (30-mer) forms a novel hemocyanin from slipper limpet Crepidula fornicata (SLH) at 7.0 4.7 Å resolution respectively. We...

Abstract Thermal barrier coating (TBC) resistance to varied CMAS deposition rates was experimentally assessed using a temperature gradient rig precursor spray. TBCs were composed of EB-PVD YSZ. Five different tested quantifying life versus rate. A high rate and low selected from those tests for sequence testing. For effect testing occurred at the initial until expected half-life then switched other failure, in order first followed by vice versa. The results suggest that can affect ultimate...

Li's paper [Phys. Rev. B 85, 235407 (2012)] presents density functional theory (DFT) results of stress as a function different strain states. The work Cooper et al. 87, 035423 (2013)] performs the same DFT calculations part an investigation into nonlinear elastic properties ${\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}$. Some Li are substantially from our recently published paper, (2013)]. Although both papers agree on states equibiaxial stress, there is substantial disagreement uniaxial tensile stress. In this...
