Abstract A continental-type glacial flood termed the Suwałki megafloods took place in NE Poland during last glaciation and significantly transformed proglacial area. This study aims, for first time, to establish chronology of this flood. Twenty-two sediment samples from two meltwater spillways were dated by optically stimulated luminescence. Sixteen ages megadunes are between 83 ± 11 ka 16.9 0.9 ka, whereas six outwash tracks range 71.5 9.9 20.3 2.5 ka. Three dates uppermost part megadune...
Abstract Sand grains from Quaternary glacial, aeolian and fluvial deposits in the Mazovian Lowland, central Poland, were examined to characterize effects of different processes on sand‐grain surfaces that experienced repeated cycles intense polar‐desert‐like conditions during Middle Late Pleistocene. A cold, dry windy periglacial environment prevailed here at least twice between Saalian (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6) Holocene (MIS 1) stages. Because surface characteristics quartz sand can...
We present a study based on four inland eolian locations in Eastern, Central and Southeastern Lithuania belonging to the northeastern part of ‘European Sand Belt’ (ESB). Although there have been several previous studies ESB, this north-eastern extension has not investigated before any detail. The sedimentary structural–textural features are chronology was derived using optically stimulated luminescence both quartz feldspar. structures rounding surface characteristics grains argue for...
Abstract It is assumed that close to the margins of ice-sheets, glacial, fluvial and aeolian processes overlap, combined with weathering processes, produce numerous sediments, in which quartz a common mineral. Quartz grains, if available, may serve as powerful tool determining depositional history, transportation mode postdepositional processes. However, grain studies some modern glacial areas are still sparse. In this study, we examine for first time grains sampled from proglacial...
Sand beaches occur along the southern and eastern coasts of Baltic Sea, their sediments serve as an excellent archive past environment. In this study, we explore four beach locations in Poland Latvia, taking a special interest at microscale. We determine sediment properties, potential extreme event records type transportation by applying grain-size analysis, analysis shape character sand grain surfaces under binocular microscope Camsizer M1 automated particle analyser, followed statistical...
The paper presents the data on an Eemian–Late Glacial sedimentary sequence from Zwierzyniec site, central Poland. A number of boreholes document one or two organic layers that occur beneath horizons clayey and silty deposits ice-dammed lakes. This study demonstrates to which extent site can contribute a better understanding palaeoenvironmental changes during Eemian–Vistulian time-frame in To it, multi-proxy approach was applied, involving: palynological plant macrofossil analysis, rounding...
Aeolian–coastal sediments and landforms are excellent palaeoenvironmental archives, but chronological studies of coastal records scarce in Sweden. In this study, we provide luminescence radiocarbon ages aeolian activity landscape evolution on the Kristianstad plain, SE Sweden, based investigations two foredunes inland dunes at Åhus Vittskövle. Additionally, do a laboratory intercomparison five young samples. The comparison shows significant age difference most likely due to an instrumental...
A unique, continuous, fan‐shaped belt of sandy landforms in the central‐eastern Mazovian Lowland, Central Poland has been investigated using a multiproxy dataset sediment physical properties and chronological framework. Although there are several previous studies similar fan‐like forms elsewhere Poland, this part not detail. combined methodological approach, grain‐size distributions, roundness, surface character microtexture quartz grains, mineral composition light heavy fractions, indicate...
The coversands distributed in the Blonie glaciolacustrine basin, west of Warsaw (Central Poland) were investigated.Textural features including grain size, rounding and frosting quartz grains mineralogical-petrographic composition sandy fractions (0.5-0.8 0.8-1.0mm) examined types, dynamics, regime variation processes during formation determined. The sands are characterized by prevalence lack micaceous minerals. Moreover, relatively high content partially rounded, matt (EM/RM) well-rounded (RM)...
We have investigated coastal and aeolian deposits on the Kristianstad plain in southernmost Sweden by a combination of methods that has yielded data sedimentary features such as grain-size variations, shape character quartz grain surfaces (determined light microscope scanning electron microscope), mineralogical composition. Such techniques been not applied to this part Baltic Sea region before. The littoral, foredune parabolic dune sands are sedimentologically similar, only slight...
The western ablation zone of the Greenland ice sheet is darker than surrounding ice, because a higher amount fine-grained particles, known as cryoconite, occur. To date, biotic cryoconite components have gained lot attention, in contrast with mineral components, which been studied to limited extent. In this study, quartz grains from holes Russell Glacier, southwest are, therefore, examined. Authors use scanning electron microscope elucidate shape, surface character and origin these...
New optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages show that sandy deposits overlain by Late Weichselian subglacial till in central Latvia are of Early to Middle age. The finer chronological resolution unconsolidated sediment deposition the Central Latvian Lowland (CLL) remains relatively unstudied, and here we provide a first characterisation with respect their Three OSL ranging between 84 ± 9 ka 112 11 suggest studied CLL age (MIS 5). We found no CLL, assume any such younger sediments might...
Two unique Pre-Viking Age ship burials were found from Salme village, Saaremaa Island, eastern Baltic Sea, containing remains of seven men in the smaller and 34 larger ship. According to archaeological interpretations, these ships belonged a viking crew possibly Stockholm-Mälaren region, Sweden. Geoarchaeological research was conducted area reconstruct Late-Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) changes shoreline displacement provide environmental context burials. In this paper we present shore...
