Abstract The Quito Fault System (QFS) extends over 60 km along the Interandean Depression in northern Ecuador. Multidisciplinary studies support an interpretation which two major contemporaneous fault systems affect Quaternary volcanoclastic deposits. Hanging paleovalleys and disruption of drainage networks attest to ongoing crustal deformation uplift this region, further confirmed by 15 years GPS measurements seismicity. resulting new kinematic model emphasizes role N‐S segmented, en...

Abstract. The depth-dependent anisotropic structure of the lithosphere under Borborema Province in northeast Brazil has been investigated via harmonic stripping receiver functions developed at 39 stations region. This method retrieves first (k=1) and second (k=2) degree harmonics a function dataset, which characterize seismic anisotropy beneath station. Anisotropic fabrics are turn directly related to deformation from past current tectonic processes. Our results reveal presence within crust...

Summary This study investigates the seismic structure and anisotropy in crust beneath Madagascar southeastern Africa, using receiver functions. The understanding of is essential for imaging past present deformation lithosphere–asthenosphere system. In upper mantle, mainly results from orientation olivine, which deforms under tectonic (fossil anisotropy) or flow processes (in asthenosphere). crust, crystallographic alignment amphiboles, feldspars (plagioclase) micas heterogeneities such as...

Abstract We investigate effects of realistic Earth's lithospheric structures on measurements SKS seismic waves birefringence, which could be perturbed by different factors. present recorded in four tectonic settings. For each case, a structure is assumed and synthetic splitting are compared with the field observations. Our results show that (a) simple where anisotropy aligned both mantle asthenosphere, can safely interpreted as dominantly related to asthenospheric flow; (b) case multilayer...

We aim at improving our understanding of the current anisotropic fabrics under northeast Brazil, which may include deformation lithosphere from past tectonic processes and on-going mantle flow asthenospheric levels. performed receiver function analysis 75 seismic stations in Borborema Province retrieved orientation depth main crust lithosphere. Our results complement a previous SKS-splitting study region, revealed lack splitting continental interior. observe presence an layer between 30 60...
