Abstract Space‐borne instruments can measure river water surface elevation, slope, and width. Remote sensing of discharge in ungauged basins is far more challenging, however. This work investigates the estimation from simulated observations forthcoming Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission using a variant classical variational data assimilation method “4D‐Var.” The scheme simultaneously estimates discharge, bathymetry, bed roughness context 1.5 D full Saint‐Venant hydraulic...

Abstract The upcoming Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will measure water surface heights widths for rivers wider than 100 m. At its native resolution, SWOT height errors are expected to be on the order of meters, which prevent calculation slopes use slope‐dependent discharge equations. To mitigate width errors, high‐resolution measurements grouped into reaches (∼5 15 km), where slope estimated. We describe three automated river segmentation strategies defining optimum...

Abstract Transceiving ultra-weak sound typically relies on signal pre-amplification at the transmitting end via active electro-acoustic devices, which inherently perturbs environment in form of noise that inevitably leads to information leakage. Here we demonstrate a passive remote-whispering metamaterial (RWM) enabling weak airborne audible frequencies reach unprecedented enhancement without altering detected ambient soundscape, is based extraordinary scattering properties formed by pair...

Existing publicly available digital elevation models (DEMs) provide global-scale data but are often not precise enough for studying processes that depend on small-scale topographic features in rivers. For example, slope breaks and knickpoints rivers can be important understanding tectonic processes, riffle-pool structures drivers of riverine ecology. More (e.g. lidar) some areas, their spatial extent limits large-scale research. The upcoming Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite...

In the inhomogeneous medium, acoustic scattering is always a fundamental challenge for photoacoustic imaging. We implement correlation full-matrix filter (CFMF) combing with time reversal operator to improve imaging quality of sources in complex media. The filtering process extracts direct wave component from detected signal and preserve all useful information at same time. A location factor considered compensate image distortion false contrast caused by limited-view detection. numerical...
