Abstract The radiological characterization of soil contaminated with natural radionuclides enables the classification area under investigation, optimization laboratory measurements, and informed decision-making on potential site remediation. Neural networks (NN) are emerging as a new candidate for performing these tasks an alternative to conventional geostatistical tools such Co-Kriging. This study demonstrates implementation NN estimating values ambient dose equivalent (H*(10)), surface...

The radiological characterization of aggregates used in construction materials is essential to determine their suitability from a protection perspective and ensure safety for health the environment. While activity concentrations radionuclides present are typically determined using gamma spectrometry, an alternative approach involves development statistical methods predictive models derived chemical composition material. The manufacture of Portland cement entails high energy and environmental costs, various solutions have been implemented in recent years to mitigate this negative impact. These include improvements the clinker or use supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash (FA) slag a replacement for portion cement. incorporation these SCMs may increase its radiological content they are naturally occurring radioactive (NORMs). Activity Concentration Index (ACI) is screening tool...

From early April 2020, wildfires raged in the highly contaminated areas around Chernobyl nuclear power plant (CNPP), Ukraine. For about 4 weeks, fires spread and into exclusion zone (CEZ) came within a few kilometers of both CNPP radioactive waste storage facilities. Wildfires occurred on several occasions throughout month April. They were extinguished, but weather conditions by airborne embers smoldering led to new starting at different locations CEZ. The forest only completely under...

The use of more eco-efficient cements in concretes is one the keys to ensuring construction industry sustainability. Such binders often contain large but variable proportions industrial waste or by-products their composition, many which may be naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs). This study explored application a new gamma spectrometric method for measuring radionuclide activity hybrid alkali-activated from solid 5 cm cubic specimens rather than powder samples. research...

For this, valid calibration based on the full-energy peak efficiency (FEPE) essential, which can be carried out for gamma-ray spectrometry using Monte Carlo codes (Geant4, LabSOCS, MNCP, etc.) without needing source preparation and with much less time consuming compared to experimental methodologies. Therefore, this work aims develop methodology FEPE determination...
