Abstract ContextGreen sea turtles are threatened by exploitation for food and medicine markets, with Asian populations facing the heaviest pressures. Sea turtle confiscations that happen out at can give a general area poachers targeting, but it be difficult to determine impact on specific nesting rookeries. Previous studies circumvented this difficulty using genetic markers identify rookery origins of confiscated green turtles. AimsTo rookeries from illegal harvesting Hainan fishermen...
Abstract The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) has experienced dramatic population declines throughout its distribution in the southeastern United States and is federally listed as threatened area west of Tombigbee Mobile rivers. While there molecular support for recognizing portion range genetically distinct, other research suggested that additional structure exists at both range-wide regional scales. In this study, we sought to comprehensively define genetic spatial scales by doubling...
Identifying geographic barriers that define genetic structure within a species is crucial in formulating an effective conservation plan. The identification of appropriate management units critical for the protection and recovery gopher tortoise Gopherus polyphemus, which have declined across their entire range.Previous molecular work at various spatial scales has identified distinct population assemblages tortoise. The goal this study was to assess tortoises through more complete sampling...
The herpetofauna of the Indomalayan bioregion Asia suffers from severe habitat loss, unsustainable harvesting, and lack research conservation. Here, we investigated range-wide phylogeography endangered "eyed" turtles (genus
Graptemys oculifera is endemic to the Pearl River drainage system in Louisiana and Mississippi, due this limited range it vulnerable environmental changes. Many impacts are anthropogenic activities, alterations may negatively impact connectivity among populations of G. oculifera. Previous studies show below Ross Barnett Reservoir might be undergoing population declines, suggesting movement populations. In addition effects, geomorphology also play a role shaping connectivity, as sister...
We studied the sexual dimorphism in body size and shape of Beal's eyed turtle, Sacalia bealei, by measuring 15 morphological characteristics 68 adult individuals (40 females, 28 males) collected from Fujian Province, China. Females were slightly larger than males carapace length with a index 0.09. This translated into greater absolute values females for all traits we measured except tail length, preanal analia to supracaudal junction length. Comparisons between sexes size-corrected indicated...
In this paper, we characterized the mitogenomes of three ‘eyed’ turtles, Beal’s Eyed turtle (Sacalia bealei), Four Eye-spotted (S. quadriocellata), and Hainan which was a unique lineage in four-eyed considered as an independent species S. insulensis recently. The full lengths bealei quadriocellata are 16,564 bp, 16,555 respectively, while length partial mitochondrial genome is 16,433 bp without tailed part D-loop. All genes exhibit typical gene arrangement transcribing directions turtles....
Abstract Wildlife trade is driving species extinctions globally, and the Asian Turtle Crisis posing a threat in China as turtle are collected from wild sold at high prices. Local ecological knowledge increasingly used to determine status of threatened taxa, but there little understanding wider relationships between indices other conservation‐relevant factors such market values traded species. To assess whether local people's awareness potentially turtles might indicate direct interaction...
Cuora amboinensis is considered to be the most wide-ranging member of its genus and has one widest distributions all geoemydid turtle species. The range spans major biogeographic barriers encompasses diverse habitats. genetics (nuDNA mtDNA) morphometry 288 sensu lato (s.l.) specimens from across were analyzed, we identified five divergent species-level clades two subspecies-level clades. One potential subspecies lacked reliable locality data, requiring further field research before taxonomic...
Sea turtles are threatened by climate change and human activity, their global populations continue to decline sharply. The Chinese government encourages artificial breeding of sea reduce the use wild populations. However, is still fairly difficult, some facilities may illegally purchase turtle eggs then sell incubated marketing them as artificially bred turtles, which adds another threat an already endangered species. Therefore, it necessary find a reliable method distinguish authenticity...
For more than three decades, the Asian turtle crisis has resulted in decline of every native species China. some species, such as yellow pond (Mauremys mutica), wild populations have dwindled to near functional extinction. Previous studies show there is deep genetic divergence M. mutica sensu lato between north and south Pearl River Drainage but no data if phylogeographic structure occurs within these two main types. In this study, we found clear structure. northern types, clades,...
