The pharmacokinetics and thermal antinociceptive effects of buprenorphine after intravenous (i.v.) or oral transmucosal (OTM) administration were studied in six adult cats. Plasma concentrations measured using radioimmunoassay a crossover study dose 20 μ g/kg given by the i.v. OTM route. Oral pH was measured. Blood for drug analyses collected before, at 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 15, 30, 60 min 8, 12, 24 h treatment. Thermal thresholds before treatment, then following treatment every 30 to 6 h, 1 hour...

Summary Reasons for performing study : Approximately 1 in 100 horses suffer unexpectedly from anaesthetic‐related death. Identification and use of the safest anaesthetic drugs should support this aim. Experimental evidence has suggested that isoflurane be a safer maintenance agent equine anaesthesia than halothane. Hypothesis The death rate would reduced being maintained with compared to Methods A multicentre randomised controlled trial was undertaken compare effects halothane all types...

Summary Detomidine, given intravenously at doses of 5 to 30 (mean 13) μ/kg bodyweight (bwt), provided adequate sedation for a variety clinical procedures in 93 per cent administrations, and improved the ease handling remaining animals. Side effects ataxia bradycardia were minimal lower dose rates. Higher required intramuscular use. In experimental trials 10 20 μg/kg bwt resulted deep also significant hypertension over 15 mins duration. Current literature on use detomidine horses is reviewed.

NSAIDS AND CATS: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are an important class of drug in feline medicine, having analgesic, and antipyretic activity. While most published data on their use this species relate to short-term (often perioperative) therapy, there is increasing evidence the value these treating chronic pain cats (for example, that associated with degenerative joint disease), some NSAIDs have now become licensed for long-term geographies. Most our knowledge therapeutic...

To estimate the effect of maternal illicit and prescription drug use on neonates in Washington State between 2000 2008.We used state-linked birth certificate hospital discharge (mother neonate) data to calculate prenatal exposure neonatal abstinence syndrome rates, compared state rates with national-level from Nationwide Inpatient Sample. We identified drugs exposure, examined predictors syndrome, assessed perinatal outcomes among drug-exposed syndrome-diagnosed unexposed neonates.Drug...

Effects of tramadol and acepromazine on pressure thermal thresholds were examined in eight cats. After baseline measurements, subcutaneous (SC) 1 mg/kg, 0.1 mg/kg with or saline 0.3 ml given. Serial measurements made for 24 h. Mean did not change significantly [analysis variance (ANOVA)] from baseline. The maximum threshold increase above was 2.8+/-2.8 degrees C at 6 h (P>0.05) after tramadol; it the 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.75, 3 Pressure increased 0.25 to 2 (P<0.05) 0.5 combination...
