Larvae of Hermetia illucens feed on different types decomposing organic matter and their development depends the quality quantity food ingested. In this study effect three artificial diets was analyzed, namely hen feed, meat meal a mixture these two diets. The effects diet ovarian development, size, mortality, duration larval pupal stages sex ratio were studied. Results indicate that worst in terms percentage mortality stages. We conclude ingested by black soldier fly larvae determines both...
The taxonomy and diversity of Fainia Zumpt, 1958, an exclusive Afrotropical genus, had not been reviewed recently. genus included six nominal species, but the status several them was debated. Identification most species depends on characters male terminalia; females are poorly known and, in cases, adequately diagnosed. We conducted a taxonomic revision generated identification tools. Based study type material specimens available entomological collections Africa Europe, we recognise here...
A revision of the species and families sarcosaprophagous flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Fanniidae, Drosophilidae, Phoridae, Piophilidae Stratiomyidae) suitable for forensic purposes in Iberian Peninsula is presented. Morphological characteristics that allow accurate identification third instars present are described presented form a diagnostic key. For larval such as spines body segments were useful genus Calliphora whereas features anal segment cephalopharyngeal...
The technology for biodegradation of pig manure by using houseflies in a pilot plant capable processing 500–700 kg per week is described. A single adult cage loaded with 25,000 pupae produced 177.7±32.0 ml eggs 15-day egg-collection period. With an inoculation ratio 0.4–1.0 eggs/kg manure, the amount can suffice 178–444 manure. Larval development varied among four different types (centrifuged slurry, fresh sawdust, without sawdust). survival ranged from 46.9±2.1%, to 76.8±11.9% centrifuged...
In order to enhance the mass production of house fly, Musca domestica, five aspects its oviposition biology were analyzed.Oviposition substrate and manner presentation, composition diet adults, size pupae numbers flies in a cage identified as critical.Females preferred lay eggs on which was presented within shelter with increased linear edges against could oviposit.Different types resulted comparable yields eggs. The presence an attractant (ammonia) manure found have potentially positive...
The annual activity and spatial distribution of Muscidae Calliphoridae were investigated in a holm-oak ('dehesa') ecosystem western Spain over two years pasture woodland habitats, using wind-orientated traps baited with mixture fresh cattle faeces, liver sodium sulphide solution. Lucilia sericata (Meigen) was always the dominant species and, Chrysomya albiceps (Weidemann), Hydrotaea ignava (Harris), Muscina levida (Harris) prolapsa more abundant during second than first year. By contrast,...
Abstract The blow fly, Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is found throughout Europe. In northern areas, in addition to breeding carrion, it can also commonly act as primary facultative ectoparasite of sheep, resulting animal suffering and production losses. However, the south Europe, L. not usually implicated myiasis almost entirely carrion. causes this behavioural difference are unclear. To begin address possible reasons for difference, present study examined effects...
The muscid Synthesiomyia nudiseta (van der Wulp, 1883) is a species with forensic importance in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This fly has recently been introduced into southern Europe and, until now, had not recorded cases this region. Here, morphology all larval instars S. documented detail by using combination light scanning electron microscopy. Literature data concerning are revised characters allowing identification from other forensically important Muscidae listed....
The largest portion of a product’s environmental impacts and costs manufacturing use results from decisions taken in the conceptual design phase long before its market entry. To foster sustainable production patterns, applying life cycle assessment early product development stage is gaining importance. Following recent scientific studies on using dipteran fly species for waste management, this paper presents an two insect-based manure treatment systems. Considering necessity regions with...
Abstract Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) is a vector of range variety pathogens infecting humans and animals. During year, housefly experiences serial population bottlenecks resulted in reduction genetic diversity. Population structure has also been subjected to different selection regimes created by insect control programs pest management. Both environmental disturbances can affect developmental stability, which often reflected morphological traits as asymmetry. Since stability great...
Abstract Understanding the biology of housefly ( Musca domestica L.) is crucial for development mass-rearing protocols in order to use this insect as a degradation agent livestock waste. In study, biological and genetic differences between different laboratory strains M. were analysed. Additionally, hybrids obtained by mixing their parameters also measured. The three presented morphological parameters, main were: size, egg production developmental time. strain A (specimens from Central...
Knowledge on the taxonomic diversity and distribution of blowflies from Madeira Archipelago is updated. New interesting findings are reported for poorly studied islands islets this archipelago, together with a brief analysis Macaronesian Calliphoridaes. l. Seven blowfly species were collected during study, including first records Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830, Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819), Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826), Pollenia rudis (Fabricius, 1794) Stomorhina lunata...
Abstract The Canary Islands are an excellent natural laboratory for understanding ecological and evolutionary processes such as biogeographical colonisation. morphology of the larva, puparium adult endemic Canarian copper fly, Calliphora splendens , is described, illustrated contrasted with those other species that occur in Africa, Iberian Peninsula Macaronesia. Partial cytochrome oxidase I sequences show a connection between C. vicina loewi croceipalpis but more distant relationship...
Rhiniinae (Diptera, Calliphoridae) is a taxon of nearly 400 known species, many them termitophilous. Approximatelly 160 valid species in 16 genera are Afrotropical, with over 60 occurring South Africa. The taxonomy this group outdated, as most studies the African taxa were conducted 40 to 70 years ago (mostly by Salvador Peris and Fritz Zumpt). Published information on their biology ecology also scarce. An annotated checklist 73 for Africa was developed, based holdings sixteen entomological...
A checklist of the 39 species blow flies (Calliphoridae and Mesembrinellidae) so far known to occur in Venezuela is provided, based on a thorough literature review examination ca. 500 specimens deposited main entomological collections country. Data from museum were used generate distribution maps for 37 species. Three are recorded first time: Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1830), Mesembrinella spicata Aldrich, 1925 umbrosa 1922.
