A merged-beams electron-energy-loss technique is described, by which absolute cross sections can be measured for near-threshold electron-impact excitation of multipy charged ions. Results are reported here total the ${\mathrm{O}}^{5+}$(2s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2p) transition from below threshold to 1.6 eV above threshold. The experimental data in good agremeent with a seven-state close-coupling calculation throughout energy range experiment. agree calculations showing that more than 90%...

The use of high-power ${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$As diode laser arrays for optical pumping Rb vapor has been examined both theoretically and experimentally. Our studies show that large atomic polarizations can be obtained using the broad spectral output a array if resonance line is collisionally broadened by several atmospheres buffer gas. objective was to study effectiveness as light sources optically pumped spin-exchange polarized...

Spin exchange cross sections have been calculated for hydrogen atoms with energy in the keV range incident on or alkali-atom targets. The generally decrease increasing energy, but also show oscillations as a function of energy. For atom an 5 Na target, total spin is 1.2*10-15 cm2. effect collisions optically pumped polarised H- ion source analysed.
