Background: Identifying the temporal and spectral information in sound is important for understanding speech; indeed, a person who has good resolution usually shows speech recognition performance. The ripple discrimination (SRD) test often used to behaviorally determine capacity. However, although SRD useful, it difficult apply populations cannot execute behavioral task, such as younger children people with disabilities. In this study, an objective approach using (SR) stimuli evoke acoustic...
The hypothesis of this study was that broader patterns physiological channel interactions in the local region cochlea are associated with poorer spectral resolution same region. Electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAPs) were measured for three to six probe electrodes per subject examine different regions across electrode array. To evaluate at a confined location within cochlea, spectral-ripple discrimination (SRD) using narrowband ripple stimuli bandwidth spanning five...
It is important and recommended to detect hearing loss as soon possible. If it found early, proper treatment may help improve reduce the negative consequences of loss. In this study, we developed smartphone-based screening methods that can ubiquitously test hearing. However, environmental noise generally results in ear sensitivity, which causes a threshold shift (HTS). To overcome limitation location, correction algorithm HTS effect. A built-in microphone headphone were calibrated provide...
Recent data from feline auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) indicate that electrically stimulated can undergo large degrees of rate adaptation to pulse-train stimuli using pulse rates within the range used by clinical prostheses. However, application Hodgkin-Huxley-type models does not produce such adaptation, which occurs over time periods on order 100 ms. We describe our development a computational ANF axon model incorporates time-changing external potassium concentration ( [K(+)](ext)) depends...
The Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) model does not simulate the significant changes in auditory nerve fiber (ANF) responses to sustained stimulation that are associated with neural adaptation. Given electric stimuli used by cochlear prostheses can result adapted responses, a computational incorporating an adaptation process is warranted if such models remain relevant and contribute related research efforts. In this paper, we describe development of modified HH single-node includes potassium ion (K <sup...
Spectrotemporal modulation (STM) detection performance was examined for cochlear implant (CI) users. The test involved discriminating between an unmodulated steady noise and a modulated stimulus. stimulus presents frequency patterns that change in over time. In order to examine STM different conditions, two temporal rates (5 10 Hz) three spectral densities (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 cycles/octave) were employed, producing total 6 conditions. explore how electric hearing constrains sensitivity CI users...
This study investigated interactive effects of stress and task difficulty on working memory cortico-cortical communication during encoding. Thirty-eight adolescent participants (mean age 15.7 ± 1.5 years) completed easy hard tasks under low- high-stress conditions. We analyzed the accuracy reaction time (RT) performance inter- intrahemispheric electroencephalogram coherences Working was higher, RT shorter, in versus task. shorter (TENS) low-stress (no-TENS) condition, while there no...
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCSs) can be underestimated and also increase mortality rates. The monitoring devices used to detect GTCS events in daily life are very helpful for early intervention precise estimation of seizure events. Several studies have introduced methods detection using an accelerometer (ACM), electromyography, or electroencephalography. However, these need improved with respect accuracy user convenience. This study proposes the use ACM banded wrist spectral...
A cochlear implant (CI) is an auditory prosthesis that enables hearing by providing electrical stimuli through electrode array. It has been previously established the position can influence CI performance. Thus, should be considered in order to achieve better results. This paper describes how influences nerve fiber (ANF) response either a single pulse or low- (250 pulses/s) and high-rate (5,000 pulse-trains using computational model. The field potential cochlea was calculated...
The goal of this study was to develop an objective and neurophysiologic method identifying the presence cochlear dead region (CDR) by combining acoustic change complex (ACC) responses with threshold-equalizing noise (TEN) test. first confirm whether ACC could be evoked TEN stimuli also optimize test conditions. second determine TEN-ACC is capable detecting CDR(s). were successfully recorded from all participants. Both behaviorally electrophysiologically obtained masked thresholds (TEN...
Spectral ripple discrimination (SRD) has been widely used to evaluate the spectral resolution in cochlear implant (CI) recipients based on its strong correlation with speech perception performance. However, despite usefulness for predicting outcomes, SRD performance exhibits large across-subject variabilities even among subjects implanted same CIs and sound processors. The potential factors of this observation include current spread, nerve survival, CI mapping. Previous studies have found...
Recognition and understanding of sign language can aid communication between nondeaf deaf people. Recently, research groups have developed recognition algorithms using multiple sensors. However, in everyday life, minimizing the number sensors would still require use a interpreter. In this study, classification method was an accelerometer to recognize Korean alphabet. The is worn on proximal phalanx index finger dominant hand. Triaxial signals were used segment gesture (i.e., time period when...
Suicide is known to be closely related depression, which accompanied by cognitive decline. This study examined whether memory performance and cortical networking differ between high suicide risk control groups depending on task difficulty. The participants were 28 school students consisting of 14 subjects. Real-time electroencephalography signals collected during a working task. Inter- intrahemispheric coherences analyzed.Higher encoding was found in adolescents compared the group. An increase...
Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) is a non-contact technology that monitors heart activity by detecting subtle color changes within the facial blood vessels. It provides an unconstrained and unconscious approach can be widely applied to health monitoring systems. In recent years, research has been actively conducted improve rPPG signals extract significant information from videos. However, vulnerable degradation due in illumination motion of subject, overcoming these challenges remains...
Semantic processing is an essential mechanism in human language comprehension and has profound implications for speech brain-computer interface technologies. Despite recent advances brain imaging techniques data analysis algorithms, the mechanisms underlying semantic representations remain a topic of debate, specifically whether this occurs through activation selectively separated cortical regions or via network distributed overlapping regions. This study investigates spatiotemporal neural...
