In situ measurements of the chemical composition individual aerosol particles at altitudes between 5 and 19 kilometers reveal that upper tropospheric aerosols often contained more organic material than sulfate. Although stratospheric primarily consisted sulfuric acid water, many also meteoritic material. Just above tropopause, small amounts mercury were found in over half analyzed. Overall, there was tremendous variety composition. One measure this diversity is least 45 elements detected...

We observed a plume of air highly enriched in carbon monoxide and particles the stratosphere at altitudes up to 15.8 km. It can be unambiguously attributed North American forest fires. This demonstrates an extra‐tropical direct transport path from planetary boundary layer several kilometers deep into stratosphere, which is not fully captured by large‐scale atmospheric models. process indicates that stratospheric ozone could sensitive changes burning associated with climatic warming.

We have developed a chemical ionization mass spectrometry technique for precise in situ measurements of hydrochloric acid (HCl) from high-altitude aircraft. In at subtropical latitudes, minimum HCl values found the upper troposphere (UT) were often near or below detection limit (0.005 parts per billion by volume), indicating that background are much lower than global mean estimate.
