Abstract Background Co-infection with malaria and intestinal parasites such as Ascaris lumbricoides is common. Malaria induce a pro-inflammatory immune response that contributes to the pathogenic sequelae, malarial anaemia, occur in infection. known create an anti-inflammatory environment which could, theory, counteract anti-malarial inflammatory response, minimizing severity of anaemia. This study examined whether co-infection can minimize Methods Data from randomized controlled trial on...
Infection with Strongyloides stercoralis is typically asymptomatic in immunocompetent hosts, despite chronic infection. In contrast, immunocompromised hosts such as solid organ transplant recipients are at risk for hyperinfection syndrome and/or disseminated disease, frequently resulting fatal outcomes. these may result from reactivation of latent infection or through transmission an infected donor. We describe the Centers Disease Control and Prevention's experience seven clusters...
SUMMARY The 2013 multistate outbreaks contributed to the largest annual number of reported US cases cyclosporiasis since 1997. In this paper we focus on investigations in Texas. We defined an outbreak-associated case as laboratory-confirmed a person with illness onset between 1 June and 31 August 2013, no history international travel previous 14 days. Epidemiological, environmental, traceback were conducted. Of 631 outbreaks, Texas greatest cases, 270 (43%). More than 70 clusters identified...
Microscopic evaluation of skin biopsies is the monitoring and (M E) method currently used by multiple onchocerciasis elimination programs in Africa. However, as repeated mass drug administration suppresses microfilarial loads, sensitivity programmatic utility snip microscopy expected to decrease. Using a pan-filarial real-time polymerase chain reaction with melt curve analysis (qPCR-MCA), we evaluated 1) use single-step molecular assay for detecting identifying Onchocerca volvulus...
The diagnosis of malaria can be difficult in non-endemic areas, such as the United States, and delays errors treatment occur too often. A nationwide survey laboratories States its nine dependent territories was conducted 2010 to determine factors that may contribute shortcomings malaria. This explored availability diagnostic tests, techniques used, reporting practices. completed by 201 participants. Ninety percent reported their had at least one type test available on-site. Nearly all...
Pediatric sepsis is a major public health concern, and robust surveillance tools are needed to characterize its incidence, outcomes, trends. The increasing use of electronic records (EHRs) in the United States creates an opportunity conduct reliable, pragmatic, generalizable population-level using routinely collected clinical data rather than administrative claims or resource-intensive chart review. In 2015, US Centers for Disease Control Prevention recruited investigators representatives...
Participants in a survey about congenital Chagas disease, distributed electronically to Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society members, perceived having limited knowledge Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Most rarely or never consider the diagnosis infants born parents from Latin America. Improved awareness of disease and assessment at-risk is needed.
Baylisascaris procyonis, predominantly found in raccoons, is a ubiquitous roundworm throughout North America. Although raccoons are typically asymptomatic when infected with the parasite, larval form of procyonis can result fatal human disease or severe neurologic outcomes if not treated rapidly. In United States, more commonly enzootic midwestern and northeastern regions along West Coast (1). However, since 2002, infections have been documented other states (Florida Georgia) (2)....
Abstract Background Targeted donor screening for strongyloidiasis performed at the time of organ procurement can prevent this life‐threatening donor‐derived infection. Method The Association Organ Procurement Organizations surveyed members to determine number US organizations ( OPO s) performing Strongyloides infection and their practices. Results All 58 s responded survey. Only 6 (10%) currently screen donors strongyloidiasis; most started 6‐36 months before survey one years prior. used...
Onchocerciasis is a neglected parasitic disease targeted for elimination. Current World Health Organization guidelines elimination include monitoring antibody responses to the recombinant Onchocerca volvulus antigen OV-16 in children demonstrate absence of transmission. We report performance characteristics modified enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and describe anti-OV-16 serum samples from laboratory-inoculated nonhuman primates (NHPs) relation microfilariae (mf) skin snip...
Abstract Background Severe malaria can be deadly and requires treatment with intravenous artesunate (IVAS). The Centers for Disease Control Prevention provided IVAS starting 1 April 2019 all patients severe in the United States. This study describes safety effectiveness of these patients. Methods Patients meeting criteria 2019–December 2020 who received were included. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, adverse event, outcome information collected. Clinical presentation, time to reach 1% 0%...
In the United States, gold standard for malaria diagnosis is microscopic blood smear examination. Because not endemic in diagnostic capabilities may be limited, causing delays and increased morbidity mortality. A survey of practices U.S. laboratories was conducted from June to July 2017; members American Society Microbiology's listserv received a questionnaire inquiring about test availability, techniques, reporting. Results were assessed using Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)...
Studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of intravenous artesunate (IVAS) for treatment severe malaria in endemic nonendemic countries. However, post-artesunate delayed hemolysis (PADH) is an increasingly recognized phenomenon after its administration. This study describes prevalence outcomes PADH events among cases treated with IVAS United States.Patients diagnosed from April 2019 to July 2021 were included. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, therapeutic, outcome measures described...
Index Case The index case was a 36 year old US-born male with history of diabetes. He received left kidney and pancreas transplant. Five weeks post-transplant he developed nausea, abdominal pain diarrhea. admitted to the hospital seven post-transplant. Duodenal & skin biopsy showed Strongyloides larvae. treated ivermectin albendazole his immunosuppression decreased. Klebsiella bacteremia both organs were removed due concern for rejection. Pre-transplant serum NEGATIVE antibody.
