Abstract In Brazil, Marine Extractive Reserves—MERs (Reservas Extrativistas Marinhas) represent the most significant government-supported effort to protect common property resources upon which traditional small-scale fishers depend. From an initial experience in 1992, MERs have expanded countrywide, now encompassing 30 units (9,700 km2) and nearly 60,000 fishers. Despite such escalating interest model, there is little research on effectiveness of MERs. this article, we discuss relevant parts...

We have studied the terrestrial reptile fauna of Abrolhos Archipelago (a group five islands located ca. 70 km off southern coast State Bahia, Brazil) and analyze here some its ecological aspects such as diet, thermal ecology, activity, reproductive parameters. Three lizards comprise archipelago's fauna: Tropidurus torquatus (Tropiduridae), Mabuya agilis (Scincidae), Hemidactylus mabouia (Gekkonidae). The first two are diurnal latter is crepuscular/nocturnal (initiating activity at 17:30)....

Abstract In the last two decades, Brazil has advanced significantly with expansion and improvement of its national system protected areas. Abstract Seascapes are large, multiple‐use marine areas, defined scientifically and strategically, in which government authorities, private organizations, other stakeholders cooperate to conserve the diversity abundance of life promote human well‐being. This approach has been applied by global nonprofit partnerships five seascapes across eight countries drawn on practical experience more than 250 partners over 15 years. These experiences have helped define Seascape approach, consisting nine...

A sample of 101 specimens the unisexual whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus nativo (Squamata; Teiidae) from a coastal site in Bahia State, Brazil were examined for presence endoparasites. Of these, 35 (34.7%) harboured helminths. Six helminth species recovered C. nativo, including five nematodes (Physaloptera retusa, Physalopteroides venancioi, Subulura lacertilia, Skrjabinelazia intermedia and Parapharyngodon sp., one cestode (Oochoristica ameivae), all representing new host records.
