Brazil has one of the largest and fastest growing economies coastlines in world, making human use enjoyment coastal marine resources fundamental importance to country. Integrated assessments ocean health are needed understand condition a range benefits that humans derive from systems evaluate where attention should be focused improve these systems. Here we describe first such assessment for at both national state levels. We applied Ocean Health Index framework, which evaluates ten public...
Abstract In Brazil, Marine Extractive Reserves—MERs (Reservas Extrativistas Marinhas) represent the most significant government-supported effort to protect common property resources upon which traditional small-scale fishers depend. From an initial experience in 1992, MERs have expanded countrywide, now encompassing 30 units (9,700 km2) and nearly 60,000 fishers. Despite such escalating interest model, there is little research on effectiveness of MERs. this article, we discuss relevant parts...
We have studied the terrestrial reptile fauna of Abrolhos Archipelago (a group five islands located ca. 70 km off southern coast State Bahia, Brazil) and analyze here some its ecological aspects such as diet, thermal ecology, activity, reproductive parameters. Three lizards comprise archipelago's fauna: Tropidurus torquatus (Tropiduridae), Mabuya agilis (Scincidae), Hemidactylus mabouia (Gekkonidae). The first two are diurnal latter is crepuscular/nocturnal (initiating activity at 17:30)....
Abstract In the last two decades, Brazil has advanced significantly with expansion and improvement of its national system protected areas. Until recently most was concentrated in Amazon region (with useful lessons). It also had an uneven ecological representation coastal marine ecosystems, waters. Despite significant advances, levels funding, staff stakeholders' engagement remain relatively low for such a vast system. Within past few years, key elements new strategy protection areas have...
Abstract Seascapes are large, multiple‐use marine areas, defined scientifically and strategically, in which government authorities, private organizations, other stakeholders cooperate to conserve the diversity abundance of life promote human well‐being. This approach has been applied by global nonprofit partnerships five seascapes across eight countries drawn on practical experience more than 250 partners over 15 years. These experiences have helped define Seascape approach, consisting nine...
Top-down contact angle measurements have been validated and confirmed to be as good if not more reliable than side-based measurements. A range of samples, including industrially relevant materials for roofing printing, has compared. Using the top-down approach, mapping in both 1-D 2-D demonstrated. The method was applied study change a function silver (Ag) nanoparticle size controlled by thermal evaporation. Large area reveals uniformity commercial Aspen paper coated with black laser printer...
A sample of 101 specimens the unisexual whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus nativo (Squamata; Teiidae) from a coastal site in Bahia State, Brazil were examined for presence endoparasites. Of these, 35 (34.7%) harboured helminths. Six helminth species recovered C. nativo, including five nematodes (Physaloptera retusa, Physalopteroides venancioi, Subulura lacertilia, Skrjabinelazia intermedia and Parapharyngodon sp., one cestode (Oochoristica ameivae), all representing new host records. Most lizards...
We studied the reproductive cycle of teiid lizard, Cnemidophorus nativo, at restinga Guaratiba, in Prado municipality, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil. The population was all female. For each female, we recorded total number follicles, vitellogenic follicles ovary, size and color largest follicle, presence corpora lutea, oviductal eggs. smallest female measured 48.8 mm (SVL). Clutch varied from one to four eggs (mean = 2.2 ± 1.0; N 37) significantly affected by (F1,35 8.437; R2 0.194; P...
Insular lizards usually consume a large proportion of plant material compared to mainland ones, which is frequently attributed low prey availability on islands. In the present study, we analyze diets six populations (three insular and three continental) omnivorous lizard Tropidurus torquatus eastern Brazilian coast, assess extent continental differ in feeding habits, especially consumption material. The degree varied greatly among areas, with volumetric food ranging from 5% 67%, but there...
In this paper, a new multiparametric optical fiber transducer is presented for simultaneous temperature and vibration sensing in hydroelectric high-power generators. The holds three multiplexed Bragg gratings (FBGs) as the elements. transducer, each FBG can simultaneously measure independent of other FBGs. With characterization, it possible to determine thermal stability (1.5 °C) over test duration sensitivity packaged FBGs 10 pm/°C. Moreover, characterization tests rely on an impact hammer...
In this paper, we used infrared light in the range of 8-12 μm to develop and test an optical imaging system detect air bubbles flowing oil. The basically comprises a broadband source 31 × 32 thermopile array generate images. To analyze effects related absorption, reflection, refraction on air-oil boundaries, numerical model was developed predominance instead absorption with diameters below certain critical value observed. IR region electromagnetic spectrum has both thermic behavior....
This article presents two in vivo instrumentation techniques to study the different types of gaits horses performing athletics using fiber Bragg gratings (FBG).These can be used as an auxiliary tool early diagnosis injuries related horse's locomotor system, mainly distal portion digit, one most common causes retirement when they are athletes. Therefore, first technique presented consists fixation FBGs without encapsulation, directly on dorsal wall hoof each limbs. In second presented, FBG...
Two-phase flows are present in many processes nature as well industrial activities such exploration, production and transportation of oil gas. In cases, flow monitoring determines the efficiency safety equipment. Thus, this paper presents a preliminary study about developing an optical tomography system for real-time gas-liquid two-phase flows. The comprises 16 sources receivers operating at near-infrared wavelength. Time response single channels is optimized allowing fast frame rate...
The population of Cnemidophorus nativo in the restinga Guaratiba, Bahia State, Brazil, is carnivorous with a diet consisting predominantly insect larvae and termites, which similar to that other cnemidophorines. absence seasonal variation may be consequence availability termites throughout year. small size ease both juveniles adults eat independent their length were probably cause poor relationship between lizard body measurements mean number volume prey consumed.
Top-down contact angle (CA) measurements are used to characterize the green leaves and purple flowers of both old young Cattleya warneri orchids. The top-down CA allows characterization large surfaces away from leaf edge, avoiding traditional cutting required for side view measurement. This area mapping without damaging making method amenable fieldwork useful in environmental diagnostics. Young found be hydrophobic whilst become practically hydrophilic across their entirety, mostly as a...
A distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) optical fiber system has been studied using intensity-based time-domain reflectometry (i-OTDR). The strain originated by sound waves (pressure waves) is in general quite small to enable the detection conventional Rayleigh backscattering intensity based systems (low signal noise ratio). Here, a 10 m portion of rolled following plane spiral shape order increase surface subjected pressure and improve ratio (SNR). performance within human voice frequency...
