Abstract Transverse‐vertical structure and temporal variability of the Kuroshio current across Tokara Strait during 2003–2012 measured by a ferryboat acoustic Doppler profiler with 2‐km horizontal resolution two‐day interval are presented. The passing through exhibits multicore velocity structure. Its seasonal volume transport variation is biannual for baroclinic components relative to 700 m, peaking in July December–January. However, barotropic component an annual cycle maximum December....

Abstract From 2003 to 2011, current surveys, using an acoustic Doppler profiler (ADCP) mounted on the Ferry Naminoue, were conducted across Tokara Strait (TkS). Resulting velocity sections (1234) used estimate major tidal constituents in TkS. The semidiurnal M 2 (maximum amplitude 27 cm s −1 ) was dominant among all constituents, and diurnal K 1 21 largest constituents. Over section, ratios, relative , of averaged amplitudes S N O P Q currents 1.00:0.44:0.21:0.12:0.56:0.33:0.14:0.10. Tidal...

A heavy rain event occurred in early July 2018 near the Seto Inland Sea. Despite clear weather after rain, water temperature at 5 m depth on eastern coast of Bungo Channel decreased by approximately 3°C. Postulating that decrease was related to event, we analyzed observed data during and conducted numerical experiments. We found surface caused vertical mixing cold supplied from Pacific Ocean bottom layer. Numerical experiments revealed not controlled but intensified event. The lower salinity...

Abstract To investigate the dynamics of tidal and residual currents in a shallow bay with narrow mouth large flat area, this study conducted three sets coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) observations at 13 stations deep area Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), China, from December 6–18, 2015. Thereafter, travel time difference data observed via CAT were assimilated into barotropic model to realize an extrapolated flats. The root mean square was 6.5 cm/s between assimilation Doppler current profile data....

An experiment for synchronous mapping of current velocity (V CAT ) and temperature (T distributions was successfully carried out using four coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) systems, from March 17 to April 1, 2013, in the Qiongzhou Strait, China. During CAT observation period, shipboard Doppler profiler (ADCP) surveys were also performed observe...

Abstract Ferryboat Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data from 2003 to 2012 are used estimate the tidal and residual currents across northern Ryukyu Island chain (RIC) between islands of Okinawa Amamioshima. In this region, M 2 tide current is strongest component, K 1 diurnal component. The corresponding maximum amplitudes 40 34 cm s −1 , respectively. After removal currents, mean volume transport, 1.5 ± 2.7 Sv, flows into East China Sea (ECS) western North Pacific through four...

Abstract. The Seto Inland Sea (SIS) is a critical semi-enclosed coastal sea in Japan, characterized by intricate coastlines and narrow straits that give rise to various fronts. Despite extensive research on tidal fronts, knowledge gaps persist regarding their spatiotemporal dynamics, particularly certain poorly documented regions. Additionally, the understanding of thermohaline which emerge during winter, requires further investigation. We aimed enhance our fronts SIS analyzing dynamic...

Abstract. We constructed a coupled physical-ecosystem model with tracking module to evaluate the influence of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and river water on nutrient distribution phytoplankton growth in Toyama Bay, deep bay Japan Sea. The technique allows us distinguish SGD- river-derived nutrients their contributions inventory growth. Horizontally, SGD-derived were primarily distributed within narrow band from coastline (< 3 km), vertically, they abundant middle bottom layers....

The intra-tidal variations of a tidal front in Bungo Channel, Japan and their dependence on the spring–neap cycle month were analyzed utilizing high-resolution (~2 km) hourly sea surface temperature (SST) data obtained from Himawari-8 geostationary satellite April 2016 to August 2020. A gradient-based detection method was utilized define position intensity front.
