Temporary ponds are seasonal wetlands annually subjected to extreme and unstable ecological conditions, neither truly aquatic nor terrestrial. This habitat its flora have been poorly studied documented because of the ephemeral character flora, changeable annual weather that has a great effect on small, herbaceous taxa declining abundance temporary ponds. The objectives this study are: (a) define plant community diversity in terms floristic composition SW Portugal, (b) identify pond types...
Abstract Questions Species–area relationships (SARs) are fundamental for understanding biodiversity patterns and generally well described by a power law with constant exponent z . However, ‐values sometimes vary across spatial scales. We asked whether there is general scale dependence of at fine grains which potential drivers influence it. Location Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods used 6,696 nested‐plot series vascular plants, bryophytes lichens from the GrassPlot database two or...
The mild climate of the central west coast Portugal has made it predisposed to exotic plants becoming established and eventually invasive in natural macchia vegetation. Here we record occurrence 34 succulents, representing eight families, as forming part alien flora region. Twenty these are naturalised 14 casuals. Five taxa succulent that widely cultivated also catalogued, given propensity become pests. Most succulents illustrated ease identification.
Coastal areas and other saline environments are major contributors to regional global biodiversity patterns. In these environments, rapidly changing gradients require highly specialized plants like halophytes. European coastal cliff-tops, rocky sandy seashores, saltmarshes, typical halophytes from the genus Limonium commonly found. Among them, aneuploid tetraploid (2n = 4x 35, 36, 37) multiflorum, endemic west coast of Portugal, is an interesting case study for investigating ecology...
Bulk density for shrubs and tree crowns is an important variable, useful many purposes, namely estimations biomass carbon sequestration potential fire behavior prediction. In the latter case, bulk required to predict rate of spread intensity crown fires. However, information scarce. The estimation crucial help choosing proper pyrosilviculture options decrease susceptibility. Due similar environmental conditions fuel characteristics in Portugal Spain, we modelled most common woody species all...
We discuss the development of, and trends in, vascular plant taxonomy in Portugal during 20th century, with emphasis on institutions taxonomists that were instrumental advancing facilitating this branch of scientific botanical endeavour. show bulk nomenclatural novelties published by Portuguese botanists for elements flora country, beyond, produced a small group 69 who mostly based at one three cities: Coimbra, Lisboa (Lisbon) Porto. In all instances individuals associated local herbaria...
Temporary ponds are seasonal wetlands subjected to extreme and unstable ecological conditions due the annual alternation between flooded dry phases. The ephemeral character of flora changeable weather explain why these habitats have been poorly studied documented. objective this study, in Monfurado Site Community Importance, was characterize wetland plant communities using a phytosociological approach numerical analysis (classification ordination). results lead site’s inclusion two Natura...
Abstract Questions What are the effects of time since prescribed burning on plant species composition and diversity in a Natura 2000 shrub–grassland mosaic? Is it possible to use reduce fire hazard simultaneously maintain conservation status such habitat types? Location Sintra‐Cascais Natural Park, Portugal. Methods We assessed differences composition, diversity, vegetation structure above‐ground biomass between plots treated with (two, four six years after fire) untreated mosaic dry...
Mentha cervina is traditionally used in the Alentejo region as a seasoning for fish dishes, well medicinal purposes. The species has been disappearing wild, due mainly to excessive collection, overgrazing, and habitat destruction. Fifteen M. locations situated mainland Portugal Spain (Extremadura) were studied using phytosociological approach. characteristic of Menthion cervinae alliance – tall therophyte plant communities with long flooding period that lasts until summer. All releves...
In continental Portugal, Sedum mucizonia (Ortega) Raym.-Hamet (Crassulaceae), a miniature, annual succulent, is known to occur especially in southern and central-western coastal areas, as well along the central- southeastern border between Portugal Spain. Current records indicate that its northwestern-most limit central Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, province of Estremadura. With at least 35% Crassulaceae species from having been recorded this region, it established...
The geographical distribution range of Sedum acre L. (Crassulaceae), a small-growing European species Crassulaceae, is extended in southerly direction the interior central Portugal.

An overview is provided of the contributions Friedrich Welwitsch (1806–1872), to development horticulture in Portugal while he was stationed this country (1839–1853), with special reference succulent plants. best known for his collecting and floristic work Angola south-tropical Africa, but also significantly contributed enhancement general gardening Portugal, adopted country. Some material collected as living propagules made their way into cultivation Portugal. Information on two forgotten...
A number of species South African Aizoaceae / Mesembryanthemaceae have become naturalised in both continental Portugal and its islands. One such species, Lampranthus glaucus (L.) N.E.Br., was once recorded as indigenous to the Algarve province southern (as Mesembryanthemum brachyphyllum Welw.), historically also from further north country, near coastal city Porto. As one consequence it eventually an exotic Europe, first edition Flora europaea, a misidentification second this work. We clarify...
