Abstract Although numerous pumping stations (PS) have been used by water managers for applications on rivers, canals and other bodies, their impact fish populations is poorly understood. This study investigates European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), mortality after natural downstream passage through a propeller pump two Archimedes screw pumps at PSs lowland in Belgium. Fyke nets were mounted permanently the outflow of during silver eel migration periods. Based condition injuries, maximum...

Abstract The large‐scale movement behavior of European catfish ( Silurus glanis L.) remains poorly understood, despite it being a species interest for conservation management. We report the patterns 13 native individual catfish, recorded using acoustic telemetry over 160‐km estuarine habitat free migration barriers in Scheldt River basin (Belgium). results show that can travel vast distances 10 km with seasonal pattern fish moving largest summer. wels is often considered relatively sedentary...

Red Lists are used to assess the extinction risk of species. Regional IUCN criteria were applied categorise 42 indigenous freshwater fish species in Flanders into List categories. As such, three assessed as Regionally Extinct, eight Critically Endangered, two Endangered and Vulnerable. A further five considered Near Threatened, 15 Least Concern one is Data Deficient. Five disappeared from Extinct category compared with previous (1988) a consequence improved water quality estuaries...

ABSTRACT For many years, navigable lowland rivers have been embanked artificially or suffered from substantial shipping wave action, leading to habitat degradation. Recently, riparian habitats were restored by creating foreshores and spawning grounds in the river Yser, a Flanders, Belgium. The aim of this paper was evaluate role these for nursery juvenile fish. To cover wide range anthropogenic disruption, four mesohabitat types selected compared, ranging semi‐natural over artificial...
