Abstract In fisheries, genetic based assignment of individuals to their population origin can benefit efforts aimed at monitoring and managing stocks. Assignment combined with knowledge the migration history provide powerful insights into mechanisms mixing, for which refined sampling methods are required minimise any impacts. this study we tested two minimally invasive swabbing techniques DNA when attaching electronic satellite tags Atlantic bluefin tuna ( Thunnus thynnus ) studies. First,...
Abstract McCully, S. R., Scott, F., and Ellis, J. R. 2012. Lengths at maturity conversion factors for skates (Rajidae) around the British Isles, with an analysis of data in literature. –ICES Journal Marine Science, 69: 1812–1822. Biological on from Isles were collected between 1992 2010. The relationship total length weight nine species (Amblyraja radiata, Dipturus batis-complex, Leucoraja fullonica, L. naevus, Raja brachyura, clavata, microocellata, montagui, undulata) are provided each sex...
Abstract International trade in vulnerable marine species is regulated once they are listed CITES Appendices (the Convention on Trade Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Parties to the submit proposal(s) 150 days prior Conference for voting inclusion new I II, making a case why listing criteria met each case. Before vote, receive advice from (a) Food Agriculture Organization United Nations, (b) Union Conservation Nature—TRAFFIC (c) Secretariat, among others. This paper offers an...
Abstract Despite increased focus on ascertaining the status of elasmobranch fish, stock units for many species are uncertain. Data from mark-recapture tagging studies undertaken 1959–2017 were analysed 13 batoid species. most comprehensive skates (Rajidae), with 22,374 released and 3342 (14.9%) returned. Most data related to thornback ray Raja clavata , blonde R. brachyura spotted montagui . Tags generally returned areas less than 50 km their release, usually ICES Division in which they...
The undulate ray Raja undulata is one of the lesser‐known skates occurring on continental shelf north‐east Atlantic Ocean. It patchily distributed throughout its range, with sites local abundance in central English Channel and off coasts Ireland, France, Spain Portugal. most abundant coastal waters (<50 m deep) often found proximity to large estuaries, rias bays. a relatively large‐bodied species, attaining maximum total length ( L T ) at least 114 cm, females maturing an c. 84 cm...
Abstract Skates (Rajidae) include species of conservation and commercial importance, but there is limited information regarding their ecologically important habitats, including spawning nursery areas, in northern European seas. Data on the distribution, relative abundance length composition skates were collated from scientific trawl surveys, based length‐frequency information, length‐at‐hatching length‐at‐maturity, allocated to length‐based categories representing early‐juvenile stages (EJS)...
Pelagic stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea) is the only species of (Dasyatidae) that utilizes both pelagic and demersal habitats. It main bycatch in longline fisheries targeting bluefin tuna Gulf Lions. In Mediterranean Sea, their stock structure, behavioural ecology movements are unknown. For first time Mediterranean, 17 individuals (39 to 60 cm disc width) were tagged with pop-up satellite archival transmitting tags using a novel method tag attachment, investigate horizontal vertical...

Data on the vigour and at‐vessel mortality (AVM) of 6798 skates (comprising Raja clavata n = 6295; R. brachyura 208; undulata 185, montagui 98 microocellata 12) captured by commercial fishing vessels in inshore waters southern North Sea English Channel were recorded. AVM longline fisheries averaged 0·44% across five (0–1·47%), although usually unhooked manually did not pass through a bait‐stripper. otter trawls 0·76% (0–2·35%), from four with tow durations <1·5 h (southern Sea) or 1–4...
The reproductive biology and other life‐history parameters were investigated for Mustelus asterias in British waters, with specimens caught from both commercial fisheries research‐vessel surveys. In total, 504 [238 males, 24–99 cm total length ( L T ) 266 females, 28–124 ] examined, further information collected 238 uterine pups. lengths at 50% maturity estimated as 70·4 81·9 males respectively. Ovarian fecundity ranged one to 28, four 20. number, mass of pups positively correlated maternal...
A population of wild rabbits in a high-rainfall area near Sydney, New South Wales, was studied for 8 years to investigate the biology rabbit area, examine factors affecting length breeding season, and describe RHDV RHDV-like virus population. The season short, starting June ending October, though some conceptions occurred every month year. Supplementary feeding with grain, germinated wheat or high-protein pellets did not extend so predictions that occurrence anaemia were influenced by lack...
Commercial landings of starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias in northern European seas are increasing, whilst our knowledge their ecology, behaviour and population structure remains limited. M. is a widely distributed demersal shark, occupying the waters southern North Sea Irish north, to at least Bay Biscay south, seasonally abundant UK waters. There no species-specific management measures for northeast Atlantic stock, complexity its not yet fully understood. To address this issue, we...
Trace metal concentrations in muscle and liver tissues from two offshore species of skate were examined. Concentrations mercury Leucoraja circularis (n=20; 23-110.5cm total length, 157-490m water depth) L. fullonica (n=24; 28.5-100cm 130-426m 0.02-1.8 0.04-0.61mgkg-1, respectively. both As Hg increased with length. Only the largest specimen had a concentration >1.0mgkg-1. Data limited for specimens>90cm long, further studies on contaminants larger-bodied skates could usefully be undertaken.
The stomach contents of 640 starry smooth-hound Mustelus asterias from the north-east Atlantic were examined. diet was dominated by crustaceans (98.8% percentage index relative importance, %IRI), with two main prey species being hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus (34% IRI) and flying Liocarcinus holsatus (15% IRI). Ontogenetic dietary preferences showed that smaller individuals [20-69 cm total length (LT ) n = 283] had a significantly lower diversity than larger (70-124 LT , 348); however, 18...
