We describe the mass spectrometric facility for measuring helium isotopes, neon, and tritium that has been operative at this institute since 1989, also sampling sample preparation steps precede analysis. For water samples in a near-equilibrium with atmospheric air, achieves precision 3He/4He ratios of±0.4% or better, and±0.8 % better neon concentrations. Tritium is typically±3 detection limit 10 mTU (≈ 1.2·10−3 Bq/kg of pure water). Sample throughputs can reach some thousands per year. These...

Abstract The Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf (FRIS) is characterized by moderate basal melt rates due to the near‐freezing waters that dominate wide southern Weddell Sea continental shelf. We revisited region in austral summer 2018 with detailed hydrographic and noble gas surveys along FRIS. FRIS front was High Salinity Water (HSSW) Ronne Depression, (ISW) on its eastern flank, an inflow of modified Warm Deep (mWDW) entering through Central Trough. Filchner Trough dominated HSSW‐sourced ISW, likely...

Groundwater age is a key aspect of production well vulnerability. Public drinking water supply wells typically have long screens and are expected to produce mixture groundwater ages. Abstract The age stratification of a freshwater lens on the island Langeoog, Germany, was reconstructed through depth‐specific sampling and groundwater dating using tritium‐helium method. is strongly affected by land use resulting differences in recharge rates. Infiltration at dune tops significantly lower than valleys, due to repellency dry sand. Dune valleys contribute up four times more per area other areas. Housing development areas might therefore decrease available fresh groundwater....

Abstract Groundwater dynamics in continental rift zone settings remain poorly understood because of the spatial heterogeneity flow, storage, and recharge dynamics. The Central Kenya Rift is an excellent example where, though groundwater important for domestic, irrigation, geothermal energy exploitation, its hydrogeological properties largely unknown. As methane is consumed in the deep sea, its 13 C/ 12 C ratio progressively increases because of kinetic isotope fractionation. Many submarine hydrothermal vents emit with carbon ratios that are higher than those background surrounding ocean. Since latter exists at low concentrations, mixing vent fluid tends to decrease as concentration decreases, opposite trend produced by consumption.
