Abstract Coral reefs worldwide are threatened by thermal stress caused climate change. Especially devastating periods of coral loss frequently occur during El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events originating in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Niño‐induced is considered primary threat to ETP reefs. An increase frequency and intensity ENSO predicted coming decades threatens a pan‐tropical collapse During 1982–1983 Niño, most Galapagos Islands collapsed, many more region were decimated...
Abstract Long-distance dispersal is believed to strongly influence coral reef population dynamics across the Tropical Pacific. However, spatial scale and strength at which populations are potentially connected by remains uncertain. To determine patterns in connectivity between Eastern (ETP) Central Pacific (CTP) ecoregions, we used a biophysical model incorporating ocean currents larval biology quantify seascape-wide potential among all population. We quantified likelihood determined...
The coral reefs of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) are some most geographically isolated world. A key to understanding their long-term persistence and population recovery via dispersal (i.e. connectivity), is knowing when corals spawn in region. To this end, we reviewed synthesized literature on reproductive phenology (month spawning) dispersal-related characteristics infer potential impact region’s functional connectivity. We classified region into four thermal regimes based mean sea...
