Abstract Modern stromatolites thrive only in selected locations the world. Socompa Lake, located Andean plateau at 3570 masl, is one of numerous extreme microbial ecosystems described over recent years. Extreme environmental conditions include hypersalinity, high UV incidence, and arsenic content, among others. After Socompa’s stromatolite communities were analysed by metagenomic DNA sequencing, taxonomic classification showed dominance Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes Firmicutes, a remarkably...

Laguna (L.) Negra and L. Verde are high altitude Andean lakes located at the 4,400 m in desert (Puna) Argentine northwest. Both exposed to extreme weather conditions but differ salinity contents (salinity 6.7% for 0.27% Verde). The aim of this work was isolate ultraviolet B fraction (UV-B) resistant bacteria under UV-stress order determine, a possible connection, between resistance UV-B tolerance salinity. DNA damage determined by measuring CPDs accumulation. Connection among pigmentation...

Arsenic exists in natural systems a variety of chemical forms, including inorganic arsenite (As [III]) and arsenate [V]). The majority living organisms have evolved various mechanisms to avoid occurrence arsenic inside the cell due its toxicity. Common core genes include transcriptional repressor ArsR, an reductase ArsC, efflux pumps ArsB Acr3. To understand resistance we performed tolerance studies, genomic bioinformatic analysis two Exiguobacterium strains, S17 N139, from high-altitude...

High altitude Andean lakes are placed in Puna desert over 4400 above sea level. Completely isolated, they exposed to extreme environmental factors like high levels of salinity, UV radiation and heavy metals low concentrations phosphorus. Nevertheless, the habitat enormous populations three flamingo species that migrate among these Lakes. Previous reports have determined bacteria isolated from environments present resistance antibiotics. The aim this work was determine diversity antibiotic...

Exiguobacterium sp. strain S17 is a moderately halotolerant, arsenic-resistant bacterium that was isolated from Laguna Socompa stromatolites in the Argentinian Puna. The draft genome sequence suggests potent enzyme candidates are essential for survival under multiple environmental extreme conditions, such as high levels of UV radiation, elevated salinity, and presence critical arsenic concentrations.

The high-altitude Andean lakes (HAAL) in the Argentinean Puna-high Andes region represent an almost unexplored ecosystem exposed to extreme conditions (high UV irradiation, hypersalinity, drastic temperature changes, desiccation, and high pH). Here we present first genome sequence, a Sphingomonas sp., isolated from this environment.

Laguna Vilama is a hypersaline Lake located at 4660 m altitude in the northwest of Argentina high up Andean Puna. The impact ultraviolet (UV) radiation on bacterioplankton was studied by collecting samples different times day. Molecular analysis (DGGE) showed that community characterized Gamma‐proteobacteria ( Halomonas sp., Marinobacter sp.), Alpha‐proteobacteria Roseobacter HGC Agrococcus jenensis and an uncultured bacterium), CFB (uncultured Bacteroidetes). During day, minor modifications...
