The new genus Austrimonus is created for Eutettix melaleucae Kirkaldy, previously in Hishimonus Ishihara, and the species redescribed as (Kirkaldy), comb. nov. Nine Australian are added to genus: A. apicalis sp. nov., biapicalis bidentatus clavatus curvatus flagellatus koebelei litorus luteus A key determination of males provided.
The leafhopper genus Amrasca Ghauri from China is reviewed. Six species are included, of which three reported for the first time China. A new species, A. (Amrasca) complana Qin, Wang & Xu, sp. nov. described based on specimens south complete checklist and an identification key to in Chinese fauna provided. Jacobiasca curvata (Ahmed Samad) comb. removed (A.) singularis Einyu Ahmed treated as a incertae sedis. Habitus photos all illustrations male genitalia also given. holotype specimen...
Two new species of the genus Maiestas Distant are described and illustrated from Australia, M. barrowensis n. sp. viraktamathi In addition, webbi Zhang & Duan, previously known only China, is recorded for first time Australia. A checklist Australian region a key their separation provided.
Abstract The Australian insect fauna is highly endemic and characterised by numerous unique higher‐level taxa. In addition, a number of groups are noticeably absent or depauperate on the continent. Many found in Australia show characteristic Gondwanan distribution patterns southern continents. There extensive radiations plant families Myrtaceae Mimosaceae, specialised arid/semiarid fauna, diverse taxa associated with rainforests seasonally wet tropical regions. also poorly studied,...
Abstract Palm production faces serious challenges ranging from diseases to damage by insect pests, all of which may reduce productivity as much 30%. A number disorders unknown aetiology but associated with insects are now recognised. Management practices that ensure the sustainability palm systems require a sound understanding interactions between biological and palms. This paper discusses pests attack palms, pathogens vector well other these pests. We re‐examine disease aetiologies...
Abstract The antennal sense organs of four Australian spittlebugs, Aufidus trifasciatus Stål, Euryaulax carnifex (Fabricius), Petyllis deprivata (Walker) and Tonnoiria tasmaniae Lallemand (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) are described for the first time, based on scanning electron microscope observations. Four major types were found: one basiconic sensillum 8–9 coeloconic sensilla expanded flagellar base, several trichoid campaniform pedicel. found in species show very similar patterns their shape,...
Abstract Phytoplasmas are insect vectored mollicutes responsible for disease in many economically important crops. Determining which species vectors of a given phytoplasma is managing but methodologically challenging because disease-free plants need to be exposed large numbers insects, often over months. A relatively new method detect likely transmission involves molecular testing DNA sucrose solution that insects have fed upon. In this study we combined feeding medium with loop-mediated...
Abstract The leafhoppers Orosius argentatus (Evans), Austroagallia torrida (Evans) and Batracomorphus angustatus (Osborn) were used in transmission tests to determine their vector status for the phytoplasma associated with Australian lucerne yellows (ALuY). Caged, seed‐grown plants monitored foliar symptom expression after feeding by transferred from ALuY symptomatic plants. Twelve of 25 developed disease‐like symptoms including stunting yellowing. most pronounced displayed five that had...
Auchenorrhyncha: This is a biosystematics catalogue for the Auchenorrhyncha, generally regarded as suborder of Hemiptera. They include planthoppers, cicadas, froghoppers, spittlebugs, treehoppers, and leafhoppers. These insects are highly diverse form major component plant-feeding fauna most terrestrial ecosystems. Auchenorrhyncha have adopted varied life habits on nearly all continents islands there may be around 42 000 species described worldwide. Compared with larger regions New Zealand -...
Abstract The glassy‐winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), is an important insect vector of the xylem‐limited plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al . that causes diseases in numerous species including food and feedstock crops, ornamentals weeds. Both are native to Americas, H. has demonstrated high invasive ability but date neither been detected Australia. Australian wine grape, table peach, plum, nectarine citrus industries particularly...
Restoring disturbed lands is essential for conserving biodiversity. In floristically diverse regions, restoring all plant species following anthropogenic disturbance financially costly and it unknown if this can be achieved. However, re‐creating faunal habitat may not require reinstating there a high degree of redundancy. Here, we assess whether redundancy among subset native chosen to restore fauna severe disturbance. Additionally, determine reestablished plants support similar assemblages...
The hemipteran suborder Auchenorrhyncha comprises a rich assemblage of plant feeding species, many which are widespread in distribution and act as vectors viral fungal diseases affecting plants.Species level identifications this group generally possible only by examination male specimens; prior DNA barcode analyses limited range indicate that approach may provide an expedient means to identify species within diverse group. In study we explored the utility barcoding for identification wider...
Abstract A key to the genera of Ricaniidae occurring in Australia is provided along with an annotated checklist described species each genus. Taxonomic changes include transfer Privesa pronotalis Distant Aprivesa Melichar as (Distant) comb. nov. and Busas Jacobi Tropiduchidae: Gaetuliini. Ricania fusconebulosa Lallemand R. pedicellata are both transferred genus Euricania (Lallemand) (Jacobi) Epithalamium moirae sp. from Western Australia. The known Australian fauna includes 29 10 genera.
Abstract A morphological and molecular review of the genus Orosius Distant (Deltocephalinae: Opsiini) was undertaken using male genitalia DNA barcoding. We recognise 14 valid species genus, which two were indeterminate, based on females only recognised by barcodes. argentatus (Evans) stat. rev. is removed from synonymy with orientalis (Matsumura) after barcoding demonstrated that are distinct; small but consistent differences in also found to support hypothesis. The other species, genitalia,...
The Australian Pentastirini are revised taxonomically. fauna comprises 56 species, 38 of which new to science. Species classified into seven genera: Cordoliarus gen. nov., Miclucha Emeljanov, Oliarus Stål, Oteana Hoch, Ozoliarus Pentastiridius Kirschbaum and Prosops Buckton. All species described illustrated identification keys genera provided. New are: mareebensis sp. australiensis acanthopygophoris O. cochleatus cuberlii globosus gracilis hamatus hirsutus lawlerorum trispiralis alces Oz....
Finschhafen disorder (FD) affects coconut and oil palms in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is characterised by yellow-bronzing of fronds which begins at the tips progresses towards petiole. Although planthopper Zophiuma lobulata (Hemiptera: Lophopidae) has been posited as a cause FD, basis relationship not established. Studies conducted previously on FD predate availability DNA-based techniques to test for involvement plant pathogens such phytoplasmas that yellows-type diseases many taxa are...
Glycaspis (Synglycaspis) confined to Australia includes gall-inducing and lerp-forming species that are probably highly specific different of Eucalyptus subgenus Eucalyptus.Based on available information, their distribution appears restricted temperate, south-eastern southern Australia. This paper reports the biology an unnamed (suspected new species) induces spherical, ostiolate galls leaves macrorhyncha in central western tablelands NSW.This completes two generations a year.Oviposition...
Abstract The influence of temporal variation in the host specificity invertebrates to estimates biodiversity is rarely considered. While patterns at large spatial scales have stimulated much attention, such comparisons are constrained for southern-hemisphere biomes because patterning on plants largely unknown. Here, we analyse plant-dwelling Hemiptera from 15 understorey plant species over 18 months south-west Australian hotspot. Analyses showed significant interactions composition between...
Abstract Ceroplastes sinensis Del Guercio is a pest of commercial citrus in Australia and has been recorded from New Zealand, southern Europe, northern Africa, North America Mexico. Its distribution mainly temperate it more restricted climatically than previously believed. Uncertainty concerning the place origin C. thwarted previous attempts at biological control. In present study, novel cost-effective approach using cladistic estimates demonstrated to determine its origin. Cladistically...
