The role that mammalian carnivores play in ecosystems can be deeply altered by human-driven habitat disturbance. While most carnivore species are negatively affected, the impact of changes is expected to depend on their ecological flexibility. We aimed identify key factors affecting use four sympatric landscapes central Argentina. Camera trapping surveys were carried out at 49 sites from 2011 2013. Each site was characterized 12 attributes, including human disturbance and fragmentation. Four...

Three experiments were conducted to determine problem-solving strategies used by toads, Rhinella arenarum (= Bufo arenarum), in spatial learning situations, using water as reward. Experiment 1 showed that toads can acquire a orientation based on body-centered turn -an internal self-reference cue. 2 use fixed landmark (visual cue) guidance solve problem. 3 determined whether maze was "body-centered turn" or "guidance". In this case, animals trained with visual cue relation (i.e.,...

Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi) is a little-known South American felid. We report here the first detailed data on its food habits and variations among 3 areas of Argentine Pampas grassland. Analysis 421 scat samples showed relatively narrow trophic niche, dominated by vertebrates, especially small rodents. Despite wide overlap in diet composition, geographical variation was found frequency occurrence primary categories, presence secondary items, mean weight vertebrate prey. These...

Discrimination of and memory for others' generous selfish behaviors could be adaptive abilities in social animals. Dogs have seemingly expressed such skills both direct indirect interactions with humans. However, recent studies suggest that their capacity may rely on cues other than people's individual characteristics, as the place where person stands. Thus, conditions under which dogs recognize humans when solving cooperative tasks still remains unclear. With aim contributing to this...

Abstract Geoffroy's cat Oncifelis geoffroyi is a little‐known South American small felid. We report data on the spatial ecology of four adults (two males and two females) that were radiotracked in an area wet grassland Argentine Pampas from February 2000 to April 2001. The mean home range size varied 248 ha [90% minimum convex polygon (MCP)] 342 (100% MCP), with male ranges c . 2.5 larger than those females. Home overlap averaged 44.7%, was more extensive between females but it decreased...

The histology of the salivary glands armadillo Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) was studied.Three pairs major compound tubuloacinar glands, parotid, submandibular and sublingual, were distinguished. The parotid gland is histologically a serous gland. The consists two lobes. The anterior lobe composed mixed acini. The posterior predominantly mucous. There reservoir or bladder, related with lobe. The sublingual mixed, mucous acini scattered demilunes.
