Defensive droplets from glandular hairs of the pupa Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis, contain a group structurally novel alkaloids, azamacrolides. Two novel alkaloids, 2-(12-aminotridecyl)-pyrrolidine and its 1-(2-hydroxyethyl) derivative, are characterized from extracts of adult Mexican bean beetles. A novel heptacyclic alkaloid, for which we coin the name chilocorine, was isolated from a ladybird beetle, Chilocorus cacti. It has unique structure made up of two tricyclic substructures, 2-methylperhydro-9b-azaphenalene and 3,4-dimethyloctahydro-8b-azaacenaphthylene.
