Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) acclimated to 5 degrees C possessed larger livers and less neutral lipid per gram of liver than 20 C-acclimated animals; quantities glycolipid, phospholipid, cholesterol did not vary significantly with acclimation temperature. The relative proportions phosphatidylethanolamine increased following cold exposure, whereas the sphingomyelin cardiolipin declined. For all phosphatides examined (phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine,...

Identification of threats is a standard component conservation planning and the ability to rank may improve allocation scarce resources in threat-mitigation programs. For vulnerable endangered sea turtles Australia, vessel strike recognised as an important threat but its severity relative other remains speculative. Documented evidence for this problem available only stranding records collected by Queensland Environment Protection Authority. With authority’s support we assessed scope quality...
The effects of temperature on the relationships among rates pyruvate carboxylation, O(2) uptake (J(o)), oxidative phosphorylation (J(p)), and free energy ATP hydrolysis (G(p)) were studied in liver mitochondria isolated from 250-g female rats. Pyruvate carboxylation was evaluated at 37, 40, 43 degrees C. In disrupted mitochondria, carboxylase maximal reaction velocity increased 37 to C with an apparent Q(10) 2.25. A reduction ATP/ADP ratio decreased enzyme activity all three temperatures....
The molecular species composition of phosphatidylcholine (PC) was determined in plasma membranes kidney for rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, undergoing thermal acclimation between 5 and 20 degrees C. Species PC from C-acclimated trout were characterized by significantly higher values unsaturation ratio (8.78 vs. 3.15), index (2.32 1.84), average chain length (34.18 33.12 carbons) than those primarily because elevated proportions 16:0/20:4 (8.67 4.42%) 16:0/22:6 (15.61 7.18%) reduced levels...
Involvement of cholesterol in thermally induced restructuring biological membranes was investigated several tissues rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Cholesterol-rich plasma (PM) were isolated from erythrocytes, liver, kidney, and gill fish acclimated to 5 20 degrees C. Mean PM cholesterol-to-phospholipid molar ratios (C/P) warm-acclimated animals significantly higher than those cold-acclimated liver (0.26 vs. 0.18; P < 0.01), kidney (0.49 0.40; 0.02), (0.66 0.60; 0.05); erythrocyte C/P...
Abstract Hydrolysis of exogenous one‐acyl,2[ 3 H]‐oleoyl phosphatidyl choline by intracellular phospholipase A 2 to yield free [ H]‐oleate and lysophosphatidylcholine was measured in isolated liver microsomes from warm (20°)‐ cold (5°C)‐acclimated rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri . Unlike mammalian , which is not typically microsomal, over 18% the total activity trout occurred microsomes. Specific microsomal preparations (4.07 nmole · hr −1 mg ) represented a 1.4‐fold purification clarified...
Fluorescent membrane probes were used to assess the fluidity of hepatocyte plasma membranes (PM) from 20 degrees C-acclimated trout after exposure and 5 C. PM isolated cells 6 h at C significantly more fluid [fluorescence depolarization 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH)] than control both temperatures. The increased was sufficient offset 45-50% cold-induced ordering. In contrast, in intact fish remained constant when exposed for a similar period. addition, inner hemilayer...
Antarctic fishes of the suborder Notothenioidei characteristically possess large stores neutral lipids that have been shown to be important both in conferring buoyant lift and as a caloric resource for energy metabolism. Previous work has established aerobic metabolism fish is fueled predominantly by catabolism fatty acids, with catabolic machinery displaying preference oxidation unsaturated acids. The composition acids released from adipose tissue during lipolysis, however, not previously...
Abstract Using the ratios of kinetic parameters, V/Km, deacylation different molecular species 1‐palmitoyl,2‐acyl phosphatidylcholine via microsomal phospholipase A 2 (PLA ) was studied in liver tissue thermally acclimated rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri ). In general, PLA from fish to cold temperatures showed an order preference for acyl moieties 18∶1>18∶1>18∶2>18∶0. Trout warm generally preferred 18∶0 PC, but actual depended on temperature assays and presence endogenous lipids...
