Abstract Alpine‐type orogens are interpreted to result from the collision of former rifted margins. As many present‐day margins consist hyper‐extended domains floored by thinned continental crust (<10 km) and/or exhumed mantle, this study explores influence rift inheritance on architecture and final evolution orogens. We propose that rift‐related necking zones, separating weakly 25‐ 30‐km‐thick domains, may act as buttresses during transition subduction collision. a result, zones now be...

Abstract We summarize here observations from the South Atlantic Angola–Gabon rifted margin. Our study was based on interpretation of a selection deep penetration depth-migrated seismic reflection profiles. describe large-scale dip architecture margin under five structural domains (proximal, necking, distal, outer and oceanic) list their characteristics. investigated necking domain further discuss distal as combination hyper-extended crust possible exhumed mantle. The mapping characterization...

We reassess the architecture and tectonic history of Western Alps based on recent knowledge developed at rifted margins. First, we replace main Alpine units our study area into a synthetic margin template diagnostic petrologic, stratigraphic, structural criteria. find that some previously attributed to internal part thick-crusted Briançonnais domain may rather derive from thin-crusted Prepiemonte hyperextended domain. assert domains were separated by mega-fault scarp. Second, revisit...
