The Van Allen radiation belts contain ultrarelativistic electrons trapped in Earth's magnetic field. Since their discovery 1958, a fundamental unanswered question has been how can be accelerated to such high energies. Two classes of processes have proposed: transport and acceleration from source population located outside the (radial acceleration) or lower-energy relativistic energies situ heart (local acceleration). We report measurements NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes that clearly...

Abstract Networks made of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and metallic nanowire networks, graphene, ultra‐thin metal films have all been proposed as replacements for transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) in photovoltaic other applications. However, only limited comparisons nanostructured networks TCOs are available. Several common figures merit that often used to compare the electrical optical performance contacts evaluated here, merits each method comparison discussed. Calculating...

Abstract We use an E × B ‐driven plasmapause test particle (PTP) simulation to provide global contextual information for in situ measurements by the Van Allen Probes (Radiation Belt Storm (RBSP)) during 15–20 January 2013. During 120 h of time beginning on 15 January, geomagnetic activity produced three plumes. The third and largest simulated plume formed enhanced convection 17 survived as a rotating, wrapped, residual tens hours. To validate simulation, we compare its output with RBSP data....

Narrowband pulsations with frequency about 7 mHz moderate amplitudes were registered in premidnight sector when Probe A was passing through an enhanced density region near geosynchronous orbit. B, which passed earlier, did not detect narrowband but only broadband noise. Despite...
