Significance Abundant in the geologic record, but scarce modern environments below 50 ° C, mineral dolomite is used to interpret ancient fluid chemistry, paleotemperature, and a major hydrocarbon reservoir rock. Because laboratory synthesis of abiotic had been unsuccessful, chemical mechanisms for precipitation are poorly constrained, limit interpretations its occurrence. In Lake Matano, Indonesia, the world's largest known ferruginous basin, more than 50% of authigenic organic matter is degraded through methanogenesis, despite high abundances Fe (hydr)oxides in lake sediments. Biogenic CH4 accumulates to concentrations (up 1.4 mmol L−1) anoxic bottom waters, which contain a total 7.4 × 105 tons CH4. Profiles dissolved inorganic carbon (ΣCO2) and isotopes (δ13C) show that oxidized vicinity persistent pycnocline some this likely anaerobically. The dearth NO3−...

Abundant in the ancient rock record, early dolomite remains scarce modern systems at low temperatures (50C), even those supersaturated with respect to dolomite. This scarcity is attributed kinetic inhibition including complexation of Mg2+ by water and sulfate, carbonate activity, Mg:Ca ratio. Methane is a major greenhouse gas linked to global warming; however, patterns of in situ methane oxidation by methane-oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs), nature's main biological mechanism for suppression, are often inconsistent with laboratory predictions. For example, one would expect strong relationship between methanotroph ecology and Cu level because methanotrophs require sustain particulate monooxygenase (pMMO), the most efficient enzyme oxidation. However, no correlation has been...
