This paper examines the interplay of opinion exchange dynamics and communication network formation. An formation procedure is introduced which based on an abstract representation opinions as k-dimensional bit-strings. Individuals interact if difference in strings below a defined similarity threshold d I . Depending , different behavior population observed: low values result state highly fragmented higher yield consensus. The first contribution this research to identify parameters k, such...

Education is a major force for economic and social wellbeing. Despite high aspirations, education at all levels can be expensive ineffective. Three Grand Challenges are identified: (1) enable people to learn orders of magnitude more effectively, (2) less cost, (3) demonstrate success by exemplary interdisciplinary in complex systems science. A ten year ‘man-on-the-moon’ project proposed which FuturICT’s unique combination Complexity, Social Computing Sciences could provide an urgently needed...

Abstract In this paper, we study the relationship between social media and traditional their impact on democratic systems. We revisit concepts of public sphere agenda‐setting translate them into current landscape. Using topic‐modelling techniques, then explore effects first level in Twitter debate Brexit referendum. Our results reveal a complex dynamic transmission agenda to agenda. The dominated debate, but not entirely, as alternative played an important role campaign. “Leave” campaign had...

Conflicts involving caste issues, mainly concerning the lowest rights, pervade modern Indian society. Caste affiliation, being rigorously enforced by society, is an official contemporary reality. Although identity a major social discrimination, it also serves as necessary condition for affirmative action like reservation policy. In this article, we perform original and rigorous analysis of discourse theme “caste” in India newspapers. To purpose, have implemented computational over big...

We analyze the empirical series of malaria incidence, using concepts autocorrelation, Hurst exponent and Shannon entropy with aim uncovering hidden variables in those series. From simulations an agent model for spreading, we first derive models as functions gametocytemia, measuring infectious power a mosquito to human host. Second, upon estimating values three observables—incidence, entropy—from data set different predict value gametocytemia each observable. Finally, show that independent...

Abstract In the last few years, study of temporal networks has progressed markedly. The evolution clusters nodes (or communities) is one major focus these studies. However, time dimension increases complexity, introducing new constructs and requiring novel enhanced algorithms. spite recent improvements, relative scarcity timestamped representations empiric networks, with known ground truth, hinders algorithm validation. A approaches have been proposed to generate synthetic that conform...

This paper provides a general perspective concerning the study of flux information in complex social systems. The recognition communicative structures through pattern-matching systems allows interpretation and prediction behaviour networks. Applying pattern-oriented approach suggests possibility that modelling, we can discover new previously unknown emergent patterns various kinds. This paper investigates first-level agenda-setting effects on Twitter during UK's EU referendum campaign. Using topic-modeling techniques, we investigate the dynamics of interaction between users and media content, how outlets relate to each other. Results show that traditional dominated debate, but alternative played an important part. The supported "Leave" stood closer users' opinion who contributed polarize media's message, with pro-Leave side successfully framing some message in his own terms.

Using an agent-based model of malaria, we present numerical evidence that in communities individuals having affinity varying within a broad range values, disease transmission may increase up to 300%. Moreover, our findings provide new insight into how combine different strategies for the prevention malaria transmission. In particular, uncover relationship between level heterogeneity and conventional unconventional anti-malarial drug administration (ivermectin gametocidal agents), which, when...

Communities are one of the most important structural elements a network. They frequently influence network behavior, which makes their identification especially useful. As result, community detection has been popular topic within science in recent decades. Even more recently, fostered by an increasing availability time stamped datasets and pressing realization that empiric networks dynamic nature, temporal have attracted increased attention. The dimension introduces new constructs...
