In patients with the acute respiratory distress syndrome, massive alveolar collapse and cyclic lung reopening overdistention during mechanical ventilation may perpetuate injury. We determined whether a ventilatory strategy designed to minimize such injuries could reduce not only pulmonary complications but also mortality at 28 days in syndrome.

Objective To determine the effectiveness of chlorhexidine 0.12% mouthwash (CHX) after tooth extraction for prevention alveolar osteitis (AO). Material and methods We conducted a double-blind randomised clinical trial stratified by risk factors. enrolled cohort 822 patients who underwent dental extractions, were considered to be at developing AO (previous surgical site infection, traumatic extraction, tobacco smoking). After randomly allocated CHX group or placebo group, matched The primary...

Clinical Relevance The use of reduced viscosity composites, such as flowable and pre-heated resins, the first increment in Class II preparations, did not improve gingival margin adaptation nor it minimize gap formation at dentin-composite interface.

ABSTRACT Background: Hemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) have been proposed as alternatives to blood for decades. Previous studies demonstrated that large molecular diameter HBOCs based on polymerized bovine Hb (PolybHb) attenuate side-effects and toxicity. The objective of this study was test the safety efficacy tense state PolybHb after long-term storage. Methods Results: subjected diafiltration remove low weight (< 500 kDa) species stored 2 years. studied in parallel with...

Haptoglobin (Hp) is the plasma protein that binds and clears cell-free hemoglobin (Hb), whereas apohemoglobin (apoHb, i.e., Hb devoid of heme) can bind heme. Therefore, apoHb-Hp complex should facilitate holoHb-apoHb αβ-dimer exchange apoHb-heme intercalation. Thus, we hypothesized could both heme clearance, which, if not alleviated, have severe microcirculatory consequences. In this study, characterized Hb/heme ligand interactions assessed their in vivo binding with was studied transfer...

Introduction: The demand for red blood cells (RBCs) is on the rise due to increasing diagnosis of chronic diseases such as sickle cell anemia, malaria, and thalassemia. Despite many commercial attempts, there are no U.S. FDA-approved artificial RBCs use in humans. Existing RBC substitutes have employed various strategies transport oxygen, extend circulation time, reduce organ toxicity, but none replicated natural protective mechanisms RBCs, which prevent hemoglobin (Hb) dimerization heme...

Abstract Background Hemoglobin (Hb)‐based oxygen (O 2 ) carriers (HBOCs) are being developed as alternatives to red blood cells and when these products unavailable. Clinical trials of previous HBOC generations revealed side effects, including hypertension vasoconstriction, that were not observed in preclinical studies. Large molecular weight (MW) polymerized bovine Hb (PolybHb) represents a new class with promising results. We evaluated the safety profile PolybHb after an exchange...

Oxygen therapeutics are being developed for a variety of applications in transfusion medicine. In order to reduce the side effects (vasoconstriction, systemic hypertension, and oxidative tissue injury) associated with previous generations oxygen therapeutics, new strategies focused on increasing molecular diameter hemoglobin (Hb) obtained from mammalian sources via polymerization encapsulation. Another approach toward therapeutic design has centered using naturally occurring large Hbs [i.e.,...

Polymerized hemoglobin (PolyHb) is a promising (Hb)-based oxygen carrier currently undergoing development as red blood cell substitute. Unfortunately, commercially developed products are composed of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PolyHb molecules, which extravasate, scavenge nitric oxide, and result in vasoconstriction hypertension. The naturally occurring Hb-scavenging species haptoglobin (Hp), combined with the purified heme-scavenging apohemoglobin (apoHb), potential candidate to alleviate...

This study describes a novel strategy to purify protein cocktail containing comprehensive set of scavenger proteins for potential treatment hemolysis byproducts.
