Abstract Background Across the Metazoa, similar genetic programs are found in development of analogous, independently evolved, morphological features. The functional significance this reuse and underlying mechanisms co-option remain unclear. Cephalopods have evolved a highly acute visual system with cup-shaped retina novel refractive lens anterior, important for number sophisticated behaviors including predation, mating, camouflage. Almost nothing is known about molecular-genetics...

The generation of neurons in the central nervous system is a complex, stepwise process necessitating coordinated activity mitotic progenitors known as radial glia. Following neural tube closure, glia undergo period active proliferation to rapidly expand their population, creating densely packed neurepithelium. Simultaneously, positioned across are uniquely specified produce diverse neuronal sub-types. Although these cellular dynamics well studied, molecular mechanisms governing them poorly...

Abstract Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a key mediator of synaptic plasticity and memory formation in the hippocampus. However, BDNF-induced alterations glutamate receptors coupled to glutamatergic synapses hippocampus have not been elucidated. In this work we investigated putative role GluN2B-containing NMDA induced by BDNF. Stimulation hippocampal synaptoneurosomes with BDNF led significant time-dependent increase surface expression as determined immunocytochemistry...

Abstract Visual System Homeobox 2 ( Vsx2 ) is a transcription factor expressed in the developing retina that regulates tissue identity, growth, and fate determination. Several mutations gene exist mice, including spontaneous nonsense mutation two targeted missense originally identified humans. Here, we expand genetic repertoire to include LacZ reporter allele designed express beta-Galactosidase (b-GAL) simultaneously disrupt function (knock-in/knock-out). The retinal expression pattern of...

Background Single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation studies of motor cortex have the advantage relying on an objective measure, evoked potential (MEP) recorded in peripheral muscles, to non-invasively explore cortical excitability. Previously, thresholds for MEP were found be normal, increased or even reduced migraine. In present study, we investigated whether level excitability changes with distance from last migraine attack could explain these inconsistent results.

Abstract Across the Metazoa, similar genetic programs are found in development of analogous, independently evolved, morphological features. The functional significance this reuse and underlying mechanisms co-option remain unclear. Here we identify canonical bilaterian limb pattering program redeployed during cephalopod lens development, a functionally unrelated structure. We show radial expression transcription factors SP6-9/sp1, Dlx/dll, Pbx/exd, Meis/hth , Prdl homolog squid Doryteuthis...

Abstract Neurogenesis, the regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation in developing nervous system, is process that underlies diversity size cell type found animal systems. Our understanding how this has evolved limited because lack high resolution data live-imaging methods across species. The retina a classic model for study neurogenesis vertebrates shown during development, progenitor cells are organized pseudostratified neuroepithelium nuclei migrate coordination with cycle...
