The paper deals with assessment of impact freezing-thawing process on slope stability. Numerical simulation using coupled thermal–hydraulic–mechanical analysis (software “Geostudio 2012”, Canada) was implemented to make accurate time-dependent forecast safety factor and defined probable failure mechanism earth structures in cold climate. Results modelling showed value decreased from 2.15 1.13 when structure's is thawing. Significant increase hydraulic gradient (from 0.1 14) observed the toe dam.

Ice cellars are a traditional way of long-term storage meat and fish near the places their commercial production in Arctic during warm season. Due to degradation permafrost, these structures state disrepair everywhere. Using example Chukchi national village Lorino, where hunting sea animals is preserved, we have considered options for solving problem preserving caught meat. Economic assessments show that use permafrost facility reasonable storing more than 100 tons products; smaller volumes,...

Abstract In a cold climate design of dams, clay barrier liners on landfills, and structures frost-susceptible soils is challenge for geotechnical engineers. During service life the frost heave may reach 15-20% depth penetration an uplift movement are accompanied by formation layered or lattice cryogenic texture. When thawing, macro- micropores formed instead ice lenses. Basically pores oriented predominantly along front. They reason horizontal water permeability increase, consequently,...

It is hard to overestimate the role of winter roads in land logistics northern regions. In recent years, climate change has not only significantly reduced service life roads, but also made them less predictable. This forces transportation increase intensity, often at expense safety, or stop that suddenly, leaving vehicles and equipment unused for long periods disrupting project deadlines. Therefore, extending reducing dependence on local weather conditions a very urgent task. To solve it, we...
