With threats to nature becoming increasingly prominent, in order for biodiversity levels persist, there is a critical need improve implementation of conservation measures. In the oceans, surveillance fisheries complex and inadequate, such that quantifying locating nondeclared illegal persistently problematic. Given these activities dramatically impact oceanic ecosystems, through overexploitation fish stocks bycatch threatened species, innovative ways monitor oceans are urgently required....

Despite international waters covering over 60% of the world's oceans, understanding how fisheries in these regions shape ecosystem processes is surprisingly poor. Seabirds forage at fishing vessels, which has potentially deleterious effects for their population, but extent overlap and behavior relation to ships poorly known. Using novel biologging devices, detect radar emissions record position boats seabirds, we measured true between seabirds vessels generated estimates intensity...

Foraging zones used by incubating royal albatrosses (Diomedea epomophora) from the Otago Peninsula and their coincidence with fisheries activities were studied global positioning system (GPS) loggers. Birds favoured areas around shelf break of eastern New Zealand continental mass, hot spots activity that coincided fishing actively exploited commercial trawl during study period. appeared to change behaviours proximity events, showing reduced speed more direct flight when at moderate distances...

Environmental and anthropogenic influences in the marine environment are primary drivers of behavior demographic outcomes for birds. We examined factors influencing foraging patterns Westland Petrel (Procellaria westlandica), a highly threatened, endemic petrel that inhabits subtropical water masses primarily Tasman Sea, with poorly known at-sea distribution. Risk assessments place species at moderate risk population impacts from fisheries-related mortality. Studies 1990s indicated trawl...

Southern Royal Albatrosses (Diomedea epomophora) were satellite-tracked from Campbell Island during the incubation period in 1997 and 1999. Their foraging activity was restricted to shelf shelf-break areas within 1250 km of their breeding site. Foraging by 8 14 individuals tracked concentrated at a zone near Snares Islands, on Plateau. Northern (D. sanfordi) foraged average nearer site than two other species greater albatrosses (Gibson's [D. gibsoni], Wandering exulans] Albatrosses) studied period.

Recent developments in assessing species-specific seabird bycatch risks demonstrated that fine-scale approaches are essential tools to quantify interactions with fishing vessels and understand attraction attendance behaviours. Matching boats movements birds tracking data specifically allows investigate seabird-fishery interaction for cryptic species which on-board information is critically lacking. The sooty albatross (Phoebetria fusca) overlaps fisheries throughout its range known be...
