Significance The stability of ecological communities under ongoing climate and land-use change is fundamental to the sustainable management natural resources through its effect on critical ecosystem services. Biodiversity hypothesized enhance compensatory effects (decreased synchrony between species). However, relative importance interplay different biotic abiotic drivers remain controversial. By analyzing long-term data from seminatural ecosystems across globe, we found that degree among...

Abstract Aim To assess the spatial congruence between hotspots based on taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity, after accounting for correlation diversity metrics, scale sampling completeness of data. Location The Ordesa Monte Perdido National Park (Central Pyrenees, Spain), a species‐rich area subjected to intensive botanical sampling. Methods We selected using different metrics two data sources (~49,000 occurrence records 1379 vascular plants in 1 × km grid cells 1218 inventories...

How reliable are results on spatial distribution of biodiversity based databases? Many studies have evidenced the uncertainty related to this kind analysis due sampling effort bias and need for its quantification. Despite that a number methods available that, little is known about their statistical limitations discrimination capability, which could seriously constrain use. We assess first time capacity two widely used proposed new one (FIDEGAM), all species accumulation curves, under...

The White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos is one the rarest and most vulnerable woodpeckers in Europe. Intensive forest practices have caused a widespread decline of species. In Spanish Pyrenees, on south-west limit species range, population lilfordi subspecies (Lilford Woodpecker) estimated at less than 200 individuals which are confined to few relatively well-conserved beech forests. Despite being an endangered taxon, our knowledge about size shape its home range still incomplete....

Background: The alpine treeline ecotone is regarded as a sensor of the effects global change on plant communities. However, little known about how dynamics influence diversity and composition Such information necessary to forecast ascending montane forests may affect flora. Aims: We analysed temporal variations in tree cover, composition, effect cover field layer vegetation over period 11 years, at two ecotones central Pyrenees, Spain. Methods: Tree was sampled permanent transects 1998 2009,...

Abstract Long‐term monitoring of biodiversity is a fundamental part environmental management, and Citizen Science (CS) approaches are increasing their contribution to such endeavour. CS plant programmes, however, almost exclusively report on the species presence, which can be used detect changes in distribution or occupancy areas, but not assess local extinction risk. To anticipate collapse populations, we need information population sizes, trends, temporal fluctuations threats. This...

Abstract Question Dispersal limitation (neutral hypothesis) and deterministic factors (niche shape floristic gradients including between‐site patterns of species’ dominance (co‐dominance). Because their relative importance remains poorly known, we ask how comparative contribution to co‐dominance changes with elevation geographical extent. Location Madidi region, NW Bolivia. Methods We analysed composition environmental 90 plots spanning the gradient from Amazonian (<1,000 m) montane...
