ABSTRACT Aim This study sets out to understand the variability in larval traits of dispersive life stages a famous invader, European shore crab Carcinus maenas , its native distribution range. Location North East Atlantic coast from Norwegian Arctic southern limit C. Southern Spain. Taxon (Crustacea, Decapoda). Methods We quantified latitudinal patterns body mass, elemental composition (C and N content), thermal tolerance first stage. collected crabs four populations spanning 25° latitude...
Abstract The Asian shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus has become invasive in North Europe and it co-occurs competes with the native European Carcinus maenas . Both species develop through a feeding dispersive larval phase characterised by several zoeal settling megalopa stage. Larvae of marine crabs are vulnerable to food limitation warming potential exacerbate negative effects on survival growth. We quantified combined temperature performance (survival growth) H. we compared our results...
We evaluated the incidence of dead copepods (IDC) in Río de la Plata estuary utilizing a vital staining approach with neutral red. The dominant species was Acartia tonsa. overall IDC on average 16.5% and it higher copepodite stage IV through adult compared earlier juvenile stages. Also, negative relationship between surface salinity found.
Abstract We studied the potential of a recently introduced species, Asian brush-clawed crab ( Hemigrapsus takanoi ), to expand its distribution range further into Baltic Sea. H. has been documented in southwestern Sea since 2014. The ability persist and Proper will depend on their sustain all stages complex life cycle, including pelagic larvae, under Sea's conditions. Range limits may be established by tolerance low salinity, which addition affected water temperature. A key question is...
Introduction At the cellular level, acute temperature changes alter ionic conductances, ion channel kinetics, and activity of entire neuronal circuits. This can result in severe consequences for neural function, animal behavior survival. In poikilothermic animals, particularly aquatic species whose core equals surrounding water temperature, neurons experience rather rapid wide-ranging fluctuations. Recent work on pattern generating circuits crustacean stomatogastric nervous system have...
Salinity is a key variable for ecological processes in estuaries. Acartia tonsa typical estuarine copepod whose responses to salinity have been thoroughly studied the laboratory. However, results cannot be extrapolated field, and formal comparisons between lab field were not attempted. Here we compare lab-based with egg production rates (EPR) from Río de la Plata estuary (RPE), focus on A. tonsa. Field work was conducted 2009 2011 mixing zone of RPE. Water temperature, chlorophyll-a varied...
Understanding biological responses to environmental fluctuations (e.g. heatwaves) is a critical goal in ecology. Biological survival) are usually measured with respect different time reference frames, i.e. at specific chronological times dates) or reproduction). Measuring on the frame central understand how fluctuation modifies fitness and population persistence. We use framework, based partial differential equations (PDEs) explore scale magnitude of variables (= drivers) depend choice...
