Dreissenid mussels have been exceptionally successful invaders in North American lakes and rivers, especially the lower Laurentian Great Lakes. As benthic filter feeders capable of attaching to hard substrates, magnitudes their biomass filtering activity nearshore waters are without precedent. The dreissenid colonization has implications for removal fate materials filtered from water by longer-term development community lake ecosystem. A conceptual model, shunt, seeks describe a fundamental...

Abstract Atmospheric photodissociation rate coefficients and lifetimes for nitromethane, methyl nitrite, nitrate were calculated as a function of altitude from their measured visible near ultraviolet photoabsorption cross sections at 298 K. The lifetime nitrite is nearly independent approximately 2 min. From 0 to 50 km the nitromethane varies 10 0.5 hr, while that changes 5.3 0.09 days, respectively.

Electron spin resonance was used to measure the diffusion of a small (Mr 170) label in aqueous cytoplasm mammalian cells. Translational and rotational motion were determined from same spectra. Based on measurements made model systems, it hypothesized that calculations apparent viscosity either or translational would distinguish between effects cytoplasmic structure diffusion. A comparative study of small temperate lakes (<20 square kilometers) indicates that the mixing depth or epilimnion is directly related to light penetration measured as Secchi depth. Clearer have deeper depths. This relation result greater incident solar radiation in and enclosures with high water clarity. Data show largely a function size distribution biomass algae indicated by between index plankton (slope) Larger steeper slopes (indicative communities dominated plankton) are associated...

The epilimnion depth of lakes is related both to lake size, which affects wind‐induced mixing, and water clarity, the over solar radiation heats water. Here we attempt isolate relative importance these two variables by examining that have changed in clarity with time (between years), nearby comparable partitioning a large number into subsets restricted range size or Secchi depth. Overall, results indicate are important determinants depth, but absolute effect (indicated slope) approximately...

Hydrophobic organochlorine contaminants were surveyed in net plankton from 33 lakes southern Ontario. Organochlorines detected all lakes. The relative concentrations of 12 common organochlorines generally similar, suggesting that they derive a source, probably atmospheric transport. Variability abundances these increased with contaminant concentration, while concentration was related to biomass, total phosphorus, and conductivity. Lakes low biomass had high indicating large portion the...
